Lagniappe Librarian

My name is Kelsye Baudoin and I am an elementary school librarian in south Louisiana. My social media name, The Lagniappe Librarian, derives from my Cajun ancestry and culture. Lagniappe, meaning something given as a bonus or extra, refers to my tendency to be and give a little bit extra in my career as a librarian.

Mission

My mission as a librarian is to ensure that every child—and every community member—has access to stories, information, and a welcoming, safe space to grow. I believe that “if you can read, you can do anything,” and I strive to empower others through literacy, curiosity, and compassionate library service.

Philosophy

I believe that libraries have the potential to save the world through the everyday work of providing access to information and a place of belonging.

Access to information transforms into knowledge, and knowledge is power: it allows people to think critically, make informed decisions, and transform their lives and communities.

Safe library spaces create possibility. Libraries are sanctuaries where people feel accepted, supported, and free to learn, explore, and become who they want to be.

As Harold Howe said, “What a school thinks about its library is a measure of what it feels about education.” I believe this extends to all of society—what we invest in libraries reflects what we believe people deserve.

My philosophy is rooted in literacy, equity, youth services, and advocacy. Whether in a school, a public library, or a leadership role, my purpose remains the same: to connect people, especially our youth, to stories, information, and the adults who believe in their potential.
