DJ Sarah "The PhDJ", the company's founder, began as a college radio DJ in the spring semester of 2000 at WHBC (Howard University's student radio station). She continued DJing there until her graduation in 2003, also serving as the station's Production Manager in 2001-2002 and interning at WHUR.
Sarah took a hiatus when she began working as a classroom teacher, but resumed DJing on college radio in 2007, during her first year as a doctoral student at George Mason University.
One day at her job in 2008, a school dance DJ unexpectedly backed out of an engagement. Sarah volunteered to fill in. The experience went so well that she was asked to DJ a colleague's house party. This party (more exposure) led to more bookings, and Sarah officially began the Lady Trackmaster company.
Since then, Sarah has been contracted for over 100 events, ranging from birthday parties to clubs and everything in between.
Lady Trackmaster has always been an all-women company. Sarah started it on her own, and Akilah ("DJ AW") and Delana ("DJ Blue Lotus") joined a few years in and helped turn it into a squad. After a stretch away, the three of us are back together. All of us have worked in schools, which is the reason we are good at reading a room, whether that room is a cafeteria full of eighth graders or a wedding where nobody wants to be the first one dancing. Every DJ we book is a woman, from load-in to load-out, and that has never had an exception.
