This beginner tutorial explains how to make a small needle felted mushroom entirely from wool. The stem and cap are shaped separately, joined together, and finished with wool details.
WHAT IS FELTING?
Felting is the process of tangling and compressing fibers until they hold together as a solid shape. Wool is a protein based animal fiber with tiny overlapping scales on its surface. These scales help the fibers catch and lock together as a barbed felting needle repeatedly passes through them.
MATERIALS
• Wool for the stem
• Wool for the mushroom cap
• Small amounts of accent wool
• A felting needle
• A felting pad or dense foam block
• Finger guards, if desired
Needle felting needles are extremely sharp. Always work against a felting pad and keep your fingers away from the path of the needle.
THE BASIC PROCESS
Shape and felt the stem.
Shape and felt the mushroom cap.
Join the stem and cap.
Add spots, dirt, drips, or other wool details.
Firm up the finished mushroom and make any final adjustments.
STEP 1: MAKE THE STEM
Roll a small amount of wool into a firm cylinder. Needle felt the wool while turning it regularly so the stem stays even on all sides. Insert and remove the needle at the same angle to reduce the chance of breaking it.
Continue felting until the stem holds its shape. Leave the top end loose and unfelted because those fibers will be used to attach the cap.
STEP 2: MAKE THE CAP
Shape a separate piece of wool into a rough disk or dome. Felt the top and edges while rotating the piece to keep the shape even. The cap does not need to be completely firm yet, but it should hold its basic shape.
Leave the center of the underside soft enough to accept the loose fibers from the stem.
STEP 3: JOIN THE PIECES
Place the loose end of the stem against the underside of the cap. Spread the loose stem fibers outward and felt them directly into the cap. Work around the entire connection until the stem is securely attached.
Check the mushroom from several angles. Continue felting the cap, stem, and connection until the entire piece feels stable.
STEP 4: ADD WOOL DETAILS
For spots, pull off a very small tuft of accent wool and place it on the cap. Felt the center first, then work around the edges until the spot is attached and shaped.
For dirt, place thin wisps of brown, gray, or another earthy color around the lower stem. Felt them lightly into the surface so the colors remain uneven and natural.
For decorative drips, shape narrow strands of accent wool and attach them along the edge of the cap. Felt each strand into the surface while guiding it into the shape you want.
STEP 5: FINISH THE MUSHROOM
Turn the mushroom in your hands and check it from every angle. Firm up any soft areas, strengthen the connection between the cap and stem, and adjust the overall shape. Add small amounts of wool when needed rather than trying to attach one large piece.
