The following recipe is adapted from Betty Crocker's Cooky Book. The book was first published back in 1963 and I am beyond blessed to have my Great Aunt and Grandmother's notes handwritten in my copy.
My great aunt first made these in November of 1967 and they were so good, she even gave them her red star of approval. She did note that storing the bowl of dough to cool was frustrating but she used her back steps as a large ice box. I guess November of 1967 was pretty chilly here in Saint Louis.
1/2 cup vegetable oil
4 oz unsweetened chocolate, melted
2 cups sugar
4 eggs (whole)
2 tsp. vanilla
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1 cup powdered sugar
In a stand mixer or large bowl, blend together the vegetable oil, melted chocolate, and granulated sugar. Slowly add one egg to the mixture at a time and stir until blended. Add the vanilla to the mixture. Stir in flour, baking powder and salt. It should change to a dough like consistency. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight.
Remove dough from refrigerator and preheat the oven to 350° F. Shape spoonfuls of the dough into balls and roll in powdered sugar. Place cookies 2" apart on a well greased cookie sheet. Bake 10 - 12 min.
