Another 100/100 movie for me!! This film is just spectacular, epic and eminently picturesque. The story has you on the edge of your seat the whole time and has you getting excited about all the easter eggs and surprise cameos. The characters are so easy to be emotionally attached to (as always) and, sometimes, you just feel conflicting emotions towards many of the main characters. More often than not, I’m not one for animated movies, but this movie is just incredible and astounding beyond words and so I must make an exception here.
Let’s, firstly, talk about the art and aesthetic of the animated film. It’s perfection. The aesthetic of the first Spider-verse movie was visually pleasing. The street art and graffiti, which plays a huge part in Miles’s life, is so attractive and cool. It represents a lot about Miles. The animation and the glitches were appealing. Everything about the style of animation in the film is just so cool. It makes you want to live in that universe. In the second film of the Spider-verse franchise, the animators brought their art and creativity to a whole new level. They had the arduous task of using multiple styles of animation, including Lego animation and some sort of Scrapbook-style animation (for Hobie), in order to make each universe introduced in the film as unique as possible. To see so many different types of animation in one scene, or in one movie, is so intriguing. I don’t think I have really seen anything like it. Somehow, despite the several kinds of animation used, they all seemed to come together really well. It didn’t seem out of place at all. It seemed vibrant and beautiful.Â
Seeing so many kinds of Spider-people was such an exciting sight too. And many of them were animated differently. If you looked closely, you could also see some of the old Spiderman cartoons on the big screen, like the 60s Spiderman, who is famous for the pointing meme. Additionally, not all the Spider-people were human. There was a Spider-cat, a Spider-horse and even a massive Spider-dinosaur. It was hilarious. And Andrew and Tobey appeared again??? Incredible.Â
Next, can we talk about the characters? You see, in the movie, Miles wants to save his dad because Spot is going to kill him. However, the death of Miles’s dad is a canon event. Meaning that it is meant to happen, and that it cannot be altered. If the canon event is disrupted, it could cause Miles’s universe to evaporate into nothing. But letting his father die, of course, sounds insane and inhumane. So he is willing to do whatever he can to save his father, but putting his entire universe at risk at the same time. He thinks that he can save both his father and his universe. But, blinded by his father’s potential death, he isn’t really thinking straight. Now, hundreds of Spider-people, including Miguel, Gwen and Peter Parker, have to stop him. It’s like every Spiderman is fighting against Miles. However, Gwen and Peter Parker, being close friends with Miles, want to protect Miles from any harm, as Miguel might hurt Miles. But Gwen and Peter are going to have a tough time because how on earth are they going to help Miles and, simultaneously, save his universe? How are they even going to help him in the first place? We’ll have to wait to find out.Â
It’s honestly so difficult to choose a side - Miguel’s or Miles’s? Miguel, out of grief and the pursuit for a happy life, caused his universe to evaporate. And that universe was where his daughter was. Well, not exactly his daughter. The daughter of himself from another universe. He just wanted to be with the one he loved the most. And it cost him way too much. Of course he wouldn’t want any more universes to evaporate as well. He would do anything to prevent any more of such occurrences. But Miles is going to lose his dad. And he loves his dad a lot despite the arguments they often have. Of course Miles would want to save him. Standing by and letting him die is just unimaginable. You see? It’s so hard to pick a side. But I wonder what’s going to happen, and who eventually gets what they want. Or if anyone even gets what they want.Â
On the Internet, a lot of people have been saying that the way Gwen treated Miles was so cruel. I get it. Gwen kept secrets from him. Half of her doesn’t want Miles to disrupt his Canon Event too, which is his father’s death. But I just think that it is so so so hard for Gwen to do what’s right, if there even is a right thing to do. She loves Miles so much because he was her first true friend since her Peter died. She really wanted to see him again, and seized the opportunity when she had it. But she joined Miguel’s team of Spidermen who help keep the multiverse from collapsing. She has a job to do too. And she cares for Miles so much. She doesn’t want him to suffer the pain of losing his universe like Miguel did. Whatever Gwen does, someone is going to get hurt. It’s really tough for her and Miles’s other friends too. They have to choose between helping their friend and saving every world. You can’t imagine the dilemma Gwen and the others are in. I wonder how they’re going to figure things out.Â
It's so so heartbreaking to see that Miles feels betrayed by his friends, and is now distrustful of them, Gwen especially. Please Miles…they're trying their best. They still love you.
I’m so excited to see the new Spider-team in action for the next film. The original members will be back along with some awesome new ones. I seriously cannot wait!!!Â
By the way, that cliffhanger was so brutal! Seriously the most suspenseful cliffhanger since Infinity War. I didn't handle either endings well.Â
Spiderman is literally a legendary character. The legacy it has left behind, and continues to create, is most impactful and noticeable. Stan Lee created such an inclusive, relatable, and beloved character that the world will continue to admire for a long time. The stories of Spiderman are something people keep close to their hearts, and I absolutely look forward to seeing more Spidermen on TV and following and loving their stories. Spiderman is the superhero of our generation.Â
All in all, this is the best movie I have seen this year so far and the best animated film to ever be created. Now, let me start the countdown to Beyond the Spider-verse!!Â
