For two consecutive summers, I have helped Professor Ellen Oliveira teach Cultures of Brazil and Lusophone Africa, an intensive reading, writing, and traveling course. Students stay with Brazilian families, read Jorge Amado's Tent of Miracles, and visit organizations such as the Steve Biko Cultural Institute, the Folkloric Ballet, and the Afro Brazil Museum.
In 2014, I started volunteering with Unlocking Silent Histories, a non-profit organization committed to the creative and critical expression of indigenous youth. With Donna DeGennaro, Professor of Educational Leadership at the University of North Carolina, I have crafted lessons on self-representation, critical media literacy, and storytelling. I have also helped organize events in which USH's student-leaders are able to showcase their own documentary films, which address issues such as conservation and modernization.
