Dr. Miguel A. Soto
I’m a chemist who sees science as both a craft and an art. My research explores ring-shaped molecules, molecular cages, and coordination complexes; tiny architectures with the potential to solve big problems in materials science, catalysis, and more!
I earned my BSc and PhD in Chemistry in Mexico working with Professor Jorge Tiburcio, then moved to Vancouver, Canada to continue my work at the University of British Columbia with Professor Mark J. MacLachlan. My curiosity is fueled not only by chemistry but also by my love for art, design, and architecture, which inspire the way I think about molecular shapes and structures. I’m equally passionate about sports, board games, and creative challenges; anything that combines strategy, teamwork, and a bit of friendly competition
As a mentor, my dream is to create a lab environment where students feel welcomed, inspired, and empowered; a place where curiosity is celebrated, and where ideas grow from playful “what ifs” into concrete goals they can achieve. I *think* that science is about building more than molecules; it’s about building people, skills, and confidence
