1. Microalgae-driven calcium carbonate and biomass production (MadCAP): CO₂ Mitigation and Biomineralization with Marine and Freshwater Microalgae
We utilize both marine and freshwater microalgae to drive calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) precipitation and biomass production. This biologically produced CaCO₃ can be harnessed as a sustainable material for applications such as eco-friendly construction, carbon storage, and functional bioproducts. By integrating CO₂ sequestration with biomass valorization and CaCO₃ utilization, MadCAP aims to deliver dual benefits of climate mitigation and resource innovation.
2. Oxygenic Photogranules (OPGs)
OPGs are self-assembled symbiotic aggregates of microalgae and bacteria with excellent settleability, EPS-based adsorption, oxygen supply through photosynthesis, and biodegradability. They provide stable, low-maintenance solutions for wastewater treatment. Our research pioneers their use for removing recalcitrant pollutants such as PPCPs and explores biomass valorization for renewable energy, as well as treatment of ROS-concentrated wastewater.
3. Biomass Valorization and Microcystin Removal from Harmful Cyanobacteria (Microcystis spp.)
We develop strategies to harvest bloom-forming cyanobacteria, particularly Microcystis spp., which produce harmful toxins such as microcystins. Our research focuses on simultaneously removing microcystins to reduce ecological and public health risks, while converting the biomass into renewable energy carriers. This dual approach mitigates the impacts of harmful algal blooms and contributes to sustainable bioenergy production.
4. Blue Carbon Research Using Algal Resources for Atmospheric CO₂ Mitigation
We advance blue carbon strategies by utilizing diverse algal resources to capture and store atmospheric CO₂. Our research emphasizes tracing carbon pathways (C-cycle tracking) within algal systems to better understand sequestration dynamics. In addition, we explore the utilization of algal biomass for energy conversion and high-value products, integrating climate mitigation with sustainable resource recovery.
