Microalgae Physiology and Biochemistry Lab.
Welcome to the Lab. of Dr. Ji Won Hong at KNU! Dr. Hong's lab focuses on microalgae biotechnology research for the production of biofuel molecules. For more information on the lab's research, publications, and members, visit the links below.
Dr. Ji Won Hong’s research group is seeking motivated undergraduate and graduate students interested in algal physiology, biomineralization, and environmental biotechnology.
Core Research Themes
MadCAP (Microalgae-driven calcium carbonate and biomass production) – CO₂ mitigation and biomineralization with marine & freshwater microalgae, biologically produced CaCO₃ utilization, and biomass valorization.
Oxygenic Photogranules (OPGs) – Self-assembled algal–bacterial aggregates for wastewater treatment, removal of PPCPs and ROS-concentrated pollutants, and renewable energy recovery.
Biomass Valorization & Microcystin Removal – Dual strategy to remove harmful cyanobacteria (Microcystis spp.) and toxins (microcystins) while converting biomass into renewable energy carriers.
Blue Carbon Research – Using algal resources for atmospheric CO₂ capture, carbon-cycle tracking, and biomass utilization for energy and high-value products.
Benefits
Tuition support for graduate students
Stipend provided (based on participation and project involvement)
Opportunities for collaborative research with domestic and international partners
