THE TEAM
She is the research leader of LEQIIP, passionate professor and mentor of undergraduate and graduate students in the areas of Insect Chemical Ecology and Entomology. Since the beginning of her academic career, she has been studying Chemical Ecology, addressing ecological questions that can be applied to support more sustainable agriculture. At Lavras Federal University in Brazil, her current research aims at investigating how herbivory and agricultural practices can shape subsequent chemically-mediated trophic interactions in agroecosystems. Fernanda currently serves as Vice-President of the Latin-American Association of Chemical Ecology (ALAEQ).
Grad Students
Bianca is Biologist and Entomologist (M.Sc.Entomology) by Lavras Federal University (UFLA). She is currently a PhD. student enrolled in Entomology Grad School developing her thesis work at LEQIIP. She has been investigating how insect herbivory influences interactions with conspecifics, nonconspecifics and predators in the coffee agroecosystem. She has experience in taxonomy of arthropod polinators, medical and veterinary entomology.
Bianca is a biologist and holds a Master’s degree in Entomology from the Federal University of Lavras (UFLA), Brazil. She is currently a Ph.D. candidate in Entomology at the Graduate Program in Entomology at UFLA (PPGEN-UFLA). Her research focuses on developing olfactory conditioning methods for parasitoids to improve biological control strategies in forest pest management. She also serves as president of the Entomology Study Group (Neento), an outreach initiative dedicated to promoting entomological knowledge to the broader community. She has experience in insect rearing and behavior.
Bruna is bachelor in Biological Sciences and Entomologist (M.Sc. Entomology) by Lavras Federal University (UFLA). She is currently a PhD. student of the Entomology Graduate Program at UFLA, where she has been developing her thesis work at LEQIIP. She has conducted studies on morphometric traits of arthropods under heavy metal stress and on phytohormones as elicitors of plant resistance. She also makes part of the Educação Ambiental Crítica (JACI), where she develops her abilities for teaching Science and Biology in fundamental and middle school.
Geísy Leal is a agronomist from the Universidade Federal de Goiás (UFG) and a Master’s degree in Entomology from the Universidade Federal de Lavras (UFLA). She is currently a Ph.D. candidate in Entomology at UFLA, where her research focuses on the recruitment of earwigs in maize agroecosystems mediated by herbivore-induced plant volatiles (HIPVs). Her academic background includes experience in experimental assays addressing arthropod pest resistance to insecticides used in agricultural systems, as well as the selectivity of fungicides toward natural enemies, with particular emphasis on Dermaptera.
Daniel seeks to understand how heavy metals are assimilated by plants of the Brassica genus and the effects this has on their morphology and physiology. He is also interested in the use of medicinal plants, particularly their proper application and their potential to treat mild diseases. In addition, he enjoys studying bioindicator organisms, such as dragonflies, and how they help reveal environmental quality, especially in aquatic ecosystems. Overall, these interests are connected to his passion for understanding the interactions between living organisms and the environment.
Jeska is a Biologist and M.Sc. student in Applied Ecology at the Federal University of Lavras (UFLA). She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences from the National University of the Peruvian Amazon (UNAP). Her research focuses on the analysis of calling songs in Orthoptera, including field recording, acoustic characterization, and taxonomic identification. She is currently joining LEQIIP, where she is interested in developing research on insect-plant interactions, integrating behavioral ecology and multitrophic interactions.
Liliana is a Biologist by Universidade Pedagógica e Tecnológica da Colômbia (UPTC) and Master in Applied Biology with emphasis in Plant Protection by Universidade Militar Nova Granada da Colômbia. She is a researcher at Corporação Colombiana de Pesquisa Agrícola (Agrosavia) and a PhD. student enrolled in Entomology Graduate Program developing her thesis work at LEQIIP. She has experience in insect behavior, plant resistance and IPM of several crops.
Rafaela is a master student at LEQIIP. She studied Biological Sciences at Universidade Paulista (UNIP), Bauru campus, São Paulo, Brazil. She will work on the influence of plant volatile organic compounds on the oviposition behavior of the coffee leaf miner, Leucoptera coffeella.
Postdoctoral Researcher
Enggel is an Agronomist and Entomologist with an M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Entomology, currently working as a postdoctoral researcher. Her research focuses on insect-plant interactions, chemical ecology, and sustainable pest management, with emphasis on multitrophic interactions involving herbivores, natural enemies, and plant-derived volatile compounds. She has extensive experience in insect behavior, and biology, and predator-prey interactions.
Researcher Assistant
Marcelly is Biologist from Lavras Federal University (UFLA). She is currently a Research Assistant at LEQIIP, where she has been studying the effect of coffee volatiles on the interaction between lady beetles and mealybugs.
Undergrad Students
Sara is an undergraduate student in Biological Sciences at UFLA. She has been participating in activities at LEQIIP as a trainee and conducting her project on the repellent potential of Cannabis extracts to whiteflies.
Maria Eduarda is an undergraduate student in Biological Sciences at UFLA. She is a member of LEQIIP as an undergraduate research student and is developing a project that aims to investigate the role of volatiles on behavior of the white mealybug Planococcus citri, with a focus on insect–plant interactions.
Maria Júlia is an undergraduate student in Agronomy at UFLA. She has been collaborating with a project on parasitoid conditioning to plant volatiles as a trainee.
