I began writing my script at 3:00pm on Friday, January 30th. The other writers involved in the event and I had already drafted our casts, so I had concepts on what to write about based on who my actors were. I knew I wanted to create a comedy, and I had three male actors, so I came up with an idea: A class all about being a real man. And by 9:30pm, How to Man Up 101 was born!
Previously, I had never touched a sound or light board, so I had had my work cut out for me. At 3:00am on January 31st, I woke up early and found every sound cue I wanted in my production, around 15, and designed 5 different lighting cues to go along with them. Later that day, my cast and I timed each cue and cut a few sounds based on what worked and what didn't. During the performance, I ran sound while my dear friend, Estella Witz, took care of lighting.Â
Directing was my favorite part of the process. My cast and I met at 6:00am on January 31st and spent the next 9 hours reading, memorizing, and bringing the script to life. Each of my cast members brought a different and exciting energy to the pages I wrote, and I can't be more grateful for their dedication. By 3:30pm, we had performed and dazzled the crowd with raw, original comedy!
