I’m Kyle Standing, and I work as a draftsman and building designer in Perth. My interest in this field centres on how an idea becomes a workable proposal: the questions that shape it, the design decisions behind it and the drawings that explain it.
Drafting has been part of my life since I was 18. Since then, my path has included TAFE study, work with builders and a civil engineering degree. Those experiences have given me different ways of looking at a project, while keeping detailed drawings and thoughtful building design at the centre of what I do.
I started drafting while studying at TAFE, building a practical foundation in residential drawing and design. Early on, I came to appreciate that a plan is much more than a picture of a building. It is a way of organising information so that someone else can understand the intended outcome.
Working for builders helped develop that understanding further. It connected the drawing process with the practical questions that arise around a building project and reinforced the value of making information clear, consistent and useful.
My qualifications include a Certificate IV in Residential Drafting and a Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) from Edith Cowan University, where I graduated with First-Class Honours. Studying engineering expanded my technical knowledge and encouraged a structured approach to working through problems.
I bring that engineering background to my role as a draftsman and building designer. It complements my practical drafting experience, particularly when I am considering how the different parts of a proposal relate to each other and which details need closer attention.
I like design to begin with a clear understanding of what a space needs to achieve. The way rooms connect, how people move between them and how the layout supports daily activities all deserve consideration. These are the questions that give a design direction.
I also enjoy the process of refining an idea. An initial concept creates a starting point, and drawing it out often reveals opportunities or questions that were not obvious before. Working through those details is one of the most engaging parts of building design for me.
Drafting is how I turn those design discussions into something people can review. I focus on communicating the arrangement of spaces and the intended work through clear plans, supported by 3D visualisation where it helps explain the proposal.
I went on to establish Perth Drafting Service, bringing together my interests in drawing, design and practical problem-solving. My work spans residential and commercial projects, but my personal approach stays consistent: understand the idea, think carefully about the details and produce drawings that communicate it well.
