A world-class mathematician who enhanced the profile of Korean mathematics
Emeritus Professor Kyung Whan Kwun has made research achievements that attracted international attention via the study of the manifold in the area of topology, and is a globally renowned mathematician that has contributed to the development of mathematics in both the USA and Korea.
He graduated from the Mathematics Department of Seoul National University and received a Ph. D. from University of Michigan in 1958. Later, while working at Florida State University as a professor since 1962, he became a research fellow at the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton. He joined the Mathematics Department at POSTECH in December 1990. During the last decade leading up to his retirement in August 1999, he served as the head professor of the Mathematics Department, dean of the graduate school, and dean of research affairs. He made significant contributions to the development of both the department and the university. Upon retirement, He established the 'Kyung Whan Kwun Endowment Fund' to support the development of junior faculty.
