In fall 2022 I taught MAT 096 College Math Preparation. In previous semesters, as the Academic and Career Coach for TRIO Student Support Services, I taught UNS 117 Financial Literacy and co-taught UNS 116 Vocational Exploration and UNS 115 Sisu Seminar. I no longer work at Finlandia University. If you would like to contact me, you can reach me by email at ndkwiek@gmail.com.
There are certain skills that we all need in order to navigate life as adults. We call these skills literacy (or literacies). We generally talk about literacy as the ability to read and write, but there is a lot more to it. Literacy varies from culture to culture: in some cultures, knowing the identities and uses of plants is literacy; in others, knowing how to care for livestock is literacy. In most cultures, some form of telling time and some form of navigating are included in literacy. In our culture—early 21st century North America, broadly—literacy also includes financial literacy, digital literacy, and basic algebra, sometimes called numeracy. These are the skills I teach.

I live in Laurium with my wife, three kids, and three dogs. I grew up in Grand Rapids, in the LP. My wife and I met teaching high school science there, although she is from the UP. We taught in Alaska for seven years, before we came to Copper Country. My first position at Finlandia was Academic & Career Coach for TRIO Student Support Services. I am still dedicated to making college success attainable for people who do not have all of the advantages I had. My purpose as an educator is to create a more just and sustainable society for my children and future generations.
