International Research Unit of Quantum Information, Kyoto University (QIU)
http://www2.yukawa.kyoto-u.ac.jp/~qiunit/
International Research Unit of Quantum Information, Kyoto University, which was launched in April, 2020, is aimed at developing new research areas based on quantum information by connecting various researchers in Kyoto University who are working on in different fields such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, informatics and economics. This unit consists of 10 departments, including research institutes, centers and faculties in Kyoto University and is mainly managed by Yukawa Institute for Theoretical Physics. This unit will invite long term and short term foreign guest researchers to establish an international research network. The interdisciplinary academic activities organized by this unit will promote creative researches and its successful research outcomes will be returned to society.
Institutions belonging to the unit (10 institutions )
Yukawa Institute for Theoretical Physics, Institute for Chemical Research, Institute of Economic Research, Research Institute for Mathematical Sciences, Academic Center for Computing and Media Studies, Graduate School of Science, Graduate School of Engineering, Graduate School of Informatics, Institute for Liberal Arts and Sciences(Center for Innovative Research and Education in Data Science), Hakubi Center
Multi-layer network research unit
Aiming for a fundamental understanding of the various layers of biological complexity on earth, such as atoms, molecules, molecular complexes, single cells, multi-cells, ecosystems, social structures, etc., as the "dynamics of complex networks in which elements interact". By sharing the methodology for studying various layers of the natural world including human society from a mathematical viewpoint of network system dynamics, we will accelerate our understanding of each layer and approach common principles that penetrate these different layers.
Institutions belonging to the unit (12 institutions )
Center for the Evolutionary Origins of Human Behavior, Institute for Life and Medical Sciences, Center for Southeast Asian Studies, Wildlife Research Center, Institute for Research in Humanities, Center for Ecological Research, Graduate School of Asian and African Area Studies, Graduate School of Biostudies (Radiation Biology Center), Graduate School of Medicine, Institute for the Future of Human Society, Field Science Education and Research Center, Agency for Health, Safety and Environment
Research Unit for Realization of Sustainable Society
https://rurss.iae.kyoto-u.ac.jp/
We are involved in projects to realize a sustainable society on a global scale in terms of environment and energy, which are led by two major themes of "Resilient infrastructure and human settlement" and "Green energy production and utilization.” These research themes will open the way to social implementation when the technological and policy aspects are inextricably linked. Adding the integration of technology and policy to conventional interdisciplinary research will bring about a new phase of joint research between industry, government, and academia. At the moment, eight departments are participating, including Institute for Chemical Research, Institute of Advanced Energy, Disaster Prevention Research Institute, Research Institute for Sustainable Humanosphere, Center for Southeast Asian Studies, Academic Center for Computing and Media Studies, Institute of Economic Research and Graduate School of Global Environment Studies. We are working on finding new challenges through interdisciplinary research having no boundaries.

The Data-oriented Area Studies Unit was established to develop comprehensive area studies research based on data science that aims to renovate the understanding of contemporary social problems. The Unit aims to achieve this goal by integrating area studies that apply versatile scientific methodologies and conduct comprehensive research of different regions utilizing existing information science on the effectiveness of these methodologies based on recent developments in data science. Varying scientific approaches of the above-mentioned disciplines are utilized to conduct this research.
Focusing on political, economic and social systems in the Asia-Pacific Region and Japan, The Unit covers various methodologies on informatics including identification method for text, picture, voice and linguistics, as well as three applied methodology: (1) text mining and analysis, (2) data construction and estimation with machine learning, (3) digital archive construction on field research. Researchers from natural, human and social sciences actively participate in joint research projects and scientific discussions in the Unit.
