Our laboratory focuses on food microbiology, food safety, and rapid microbial detection technologies. Our research aims to understand the potential role of food in the dissemination of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and to develop rapid detection methods for foodborne pathogens through biosensing and biochip technologies. Our research encompasses two major areas:
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has become a major global public health concern. In addition to healthcare settings, food may serve as an important vehicle for the transmission of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and resistance genes among humans, the environment, and the food chain.
Our laboratory focuses on the isolation, identification, and characterization of antibiotic-resistant bacteria from food. By investigating antimicrobial resistance phenotypes and resistance-associated genes in foodborne isolates, we aim to better understand the potential role of food in AMR dissemination and provide scientific evidence for food safety and antimicrobial resistance surveillance.
Conventional culture-based methods and colony-forming unit (CFU) counting remain important approaches for microbial assessment in food. However, these methods involve multiple labor-intensive procedures, including sample dilution, plating, incubation, and colony counting, and generally require at least 24 hours before results can be obtained. Therefore, developing rapid approaches for the detection and quantification of viable bacteria is an important goal in food safety testing.
Our laboratory focuses on the application of biochip for the rapid detection of foodborne pathogens, with particular interest in the development and application of biosensor field-effect transistor (Bio-FET) platforms. Our goal is to establish rapid, sensitive, and practical microbial detection systems that reduce the time required by conventional culture-based methods and facilitate their future application in food safety monitoring.
