Math 347 C2M: Fundamental Mathematics (Spring 2024)

Meeting times:
MWF 12:00-12:50 pm in 147 Altgeld Hall (starting Monday, January 22); the backup room is G24 Literatures, Cultures, and Linguistics Building;
T 9:00-10:50 am in 6 Burrill Hall.
Office Hours: Monday, Wednesday 2-3 pm and Friday 3-4 pm in 165 Altgeld Hall or by appointment.
Moodle: Students can check the Moodle course page for most of the course information. This includes lecture notes, homework assignments/solutions, exam dates, and other details.
Course contents: This course is an introduction to rigorous mathematical reasoning and writing, fundamental structures, and methods of proof. Topics to be covered: Logic, number theory, set theory, functions, induction, equivalence relations, cardinality, and convergence.
Assignments: There will be in-class activities/worksheets and weekly homework assignments, details on Moodle.
Exams: There will be three midterm exams and a final exam. The midterm will take place in class. For more information, check Moodle.
Grading: Your final grades will be computed based on the following percentages:
Homework: 20%,
Three midterm exams: 15% each for the best two, and 10% for the lowest one,
Final exam: 30%,
In-class activity, worksheet, quiz: 10%.
