Dr. Annie Tremblay (Professor, Linguistics)

  • Dr. Annie Tremblay received her MA in Spanish from the University of Ottawa (Canada) in 2002, and her PhD in Second Language Acquisition from the University of Hawai'i in 2007. From 2007 to 2012, she worked as Assistant Professor in the Department of French at the University of Illinois, and she has been a faculty in the Department of Linguistics at the University of Kansas since 2012. She specializes in adult second language speech perception and processing, and has some interests in adult second-language morphological processing and proficiency assessment. She is originally from Québec, Canada, speaks Spanish fluently, and can't seem to get rid of her French Canadian accent.

Dr. Katie Coughlin (Assistant Teaching Professor, Linguistics)

  • Kate received her MA in French Language Learning in 2011 at the University of Illinois, and her PhD in Linguistics in 2016 at the University of Kansas. Her work in second language processing focuses on morphological processing, speech segmentation, and the cognitive factors that affect second language processing. She grew up in New York and in the suburbs of Chicago, and insists she does not have a Chicago accent.

Hyoju Kim (PhD Student, Linguistics)

  • Hyoju received his MA in Linguistics at Seoul National University. His research interests include spoken word recognition, second language processing, psycholinguistics, phonetics, and phonology. Since he was born in Daegu, where a tonal dialect of Korean is spoken but grew up in Seoul, where a non-tonal dialect of Korean is spoken, he can speak two dialects of Korean.

Jinmyung Lee (PhD Student, Linguistics)

  • Jinmyung received her MA in English Linguistics at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies. Her research interests are second language processing, psycholinguistics, and neurolinguistics. She has worked on the processing of translations and phonologically related words in Korean-English bilinguals.

Seulgi Shin (PhD Student, Linguistics)

  • Seulgi received her MA in Linguistics in 2015 at the Hanyang University in Korea, specializing in Phonetics. Her research interests include second language processing, phonetics, speech prosody, and phonetics & phonology interplay. She grew up in a suburb of Seoul in Korea and speaks very plain Seoul Korean, pretending to be a city girl.

Yuyu (Rustle) Zeng (PhD Student, Linguistics)

  • Rustle received her MPhil in linguistics in 2016 at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, specializing in phonetics. Her research interests include L1 & L2 speech perception, sound change, tone quantification, and cognitive neuroscience. She grew up in Chongqing, China’s fourth direct-controlled municipality besides Beijing, Shanghai, and Tianjin. Although she can perceive and produce the /in/ and /iŋ/ contrast in Mandarin, she pretends to have an accent by merging them when speaking Mandarin.
