We highly recommend having a fully functioning phone while abroad. Relying solely on WiFi is typically not sufficient. Check with you phone service provider about international plans, or use a local SIM card. To use a local SIM card, your phone must be unlocked. If your phone is paid off, you can ask your phone service provider for the unlock code. Make sure you do this before you go abroad.
Comments from previous students regrading the phone:
- I recommend using SKT or KT telecom.
- Korea University KUBA orientation takes exchange students to get their phone plans and help translate for students who don’t speak Korean or the worker can’t communicate in English well. I personally used the Sprint International plan because I have unlimited so I didn’t have to pay extra.
- SKT has a good plan that you have to purchase the SIM card, but you get a monthly plan you can refill. I took 5 GB and like 10 minutes of calling for around a total of 40 dollars. It lasted me a long time. Just use skype to call home.
