What is Knowledge Translation/ Knowledge Mobilization?
Knowledge Mobilization (KMb) is the process of connecting research knowledge with people who can use it to create positive change in society. It involves taking research findings and ensuring they are shared, understood, and applied by the relevant audiences, such as policymakers, practitioners, and community members. The goal is to drive informed decision-making, improve practices, and create real-world impact based on evidence.
Knowledge Translation (KT) is the process of taking research findings and making them accessible, understandable, and applicable to people who can benefit from them, such as healthcare practitioners, policymakers, or the general public. It bridges the gap between research evidence and practical application, ensuring that valuable knowledge is used to improve policies, practices, and outcomes.
Both terms are used interchangeably, but KT is more specifically used for clinical settings, and KMB more for settings including outreach, and involving communities and social sciences.
Key Aspects of Knowledge Translation
Knowledge Synthesis: Summarizing and simplifying complex research findings to make them understandable and actionable.
Dissemination: Sharing knowledge through various channels, such as publications, presentations, social media, and community workshops.
Exchange: Engaging stakeholders, including researchers, practitioners, and communities, in discussions about how knowledge can be applied in real-world settings.
Application: Implementing research findings in practice to improve outcomes. This often includes adapting knowledge to fit local contexts or specific populations.
Why Knowledge Translation Matters
Improves Decision-Making: KT helps stakeholders make informed decisions based on the latest research.
Enhances Healthcare and Policy: In fields like healthcare, KT ensures that proven interventions and best practices are adopted widely.
Promotes Evidence-Based Practice: It supports a culture where decisions are based on scientific evidence rather than tradition or anecdote.
Examples of Knowledge Translation Activities
Developing easy-to-read guidelines for healthcare providers based on new research.
Creating informational brochures for patients to help them understand health conditions and treatments.
Hosting workshops or webinars for practitioners to discuss the latest research findings.

Knowledge Translation activities at BMY Health
BMY Health Pakistan is focused on advancing clinical and public health knowledge translation by ensuring that research findings reach the people and communities who can benefit most. In 2024, BMY Health Pakistan introduced a Knowledge Translation (KT) Unit to bridge the gap between research findings and practical applications in public health across the country.
BMY Health strives to disseminate knowledge via multiple channels, including publications, social media, conference presentations, and educational videos. Our Knowledge Translation (KT) Unit, introduced recently, aims to foster collaborations across academia, industry, policymakers, and community stakeholders to drive innovation and create a tangible impact on public health practices in Pakistan.
Capacity building activities were started on the subject by BMY Health team. In June, a session was conducted on KMB/ KT by Dr. Asmara Malik for mentors. In November, 2024, Dr. Bushra Anwar delivered a keynote speech on Knowledge Mobilization and Research Impact at 2nd ICHPER by SZMDC Lahore.
