Kansas Gamma has been involved with Kansas Department of Transportation's Adopt-A-Highway cleanup program since spring 2013. The agreement requires our chapter to clean our section of roadway no less than three times each calendar year. We accomplish this by cleaning twice in the spring and once in the fall. This arrangement works out well, since the goal is to complete at least two service projects each semester and we complete the KS Hill service project once each fall. Kansas Gamma's section of roadway is a two-mile-long stretch of U.S. Highway 24 (aka Tuttle Creek Blvd.) between mileposts 314 and 316
Maybe it's a coincidence that we picked a section with milepost 314... Maybe it isn't... The highway cleanups are usually quite fun, and it's always exciting to see which group will find the weirdest objects. We've found steel boat anchors, dressers, giant piles of bricks, dressers, you name it. It's a good time and a great opportunity to directly improve the appearance of the Manhattan community and to indirectly improve the health of Kansas waterways.
