DEI pedagogy is the practice of ensuring that all students feel seen and valued. This pedagogy allows students to engage with each other through active listening to comprehend diverse perspectives, to raise critical awareness, and think about not only their personal lives but also the life experiences and perspectives of others.
Why do DEI pedagogy?
· This pedagogical practice allows all students, especially marginalized students, to feel seen and valued, and as a result, they are more likely to engage in the course material and learn.
· Additionally, this practice also helps non-marginalized students listen and understand differing perspectives, preparing them for the work world.
How does DEI pedagogy enrich students learning?
· Develop “rhetorical listening” (Ratcliff) skills
· Develop emphatic responses to diverse voices/ideas
· Develop “racial literacy” (Grayson) and other similar literacies of DEI
· Develop effective rhetorical response and communication skills
· Develop a strong sense of self-awareness

Push to Succeed
How do you decide what kind of course you want to teach?
As you decide on the course, what are your priorities for selecting content?
How do you select textbooks materials to teach for your courses?
What are your priorities while writing the syllabi?
How do you select assignments for a course? If assignments are pre-selected, how do you structure the assignments to fit them in your course? What are your priorities here?
How do you respond to students if you come across a difficult situation?
What are your policies with struggling (because of any skill set, disposition or social issue) students in your classroom?
As you think through these questions, identify 3 core values that thread your work in and outside the classroom such as integrity, value, success, empathy, etc.
The core values guide your pedagogy and are fundamental to how you view teaching and respond to your students. This is your teaching pedagogy.
