Design a visually compelling LinkedIn banner that effectively communicates expertise in geospatial data, engaging both professionals and students in GIS, geomatics, and related fields.
Conducted Primary Research
Created Wireframes and Mockups
Conducted User Testing
Developed Prototype
Collaborated with Stakeholders
Iterated Design
Refined and Finalized Designs
Conducted design research, by reviewing existing LinkedIn banners in the geospatial field to identify effective visual elements and trends, ensuring alignment with industry standards.
Primary Audience: Professionals in GIS, geomatics, LiDAR, geoinformatics, business analysis, and software engineering.
Secondary Audience: Students pursuing studies in software development and geospatial sciences.
Interested Organizations: Entities focused on geospatial data applications and remote sensing.
Identify Key Organizations: Identify 5 organizations on LinkedIn in the professional geomatics industry.
Visual Comparison: Make a visual comparison of their LinkedIn banners and overall branding.
Trend Analysis: Analyze current trends within these organizations to identify common visual elements and innovative approaches.
Online Research: Search and review necessary information on the internet, including industry reports, articles, and case studies.
Competitor Analysis: Compose a detailed competitor analysis, focusing on strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats.
SWOT Analysis: Conduct a SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities & Threats) analysis for each identified organization to evaluate their market position and design strategies.
Competitor Analysis: Evaluated how similar organizations present themselves to identify strengths and opportunities.
Design Trends: Researched current design trends to ensure visual appeal and relevance.
Branding Guidelines: Entities focused on geospatial data applications and remote sensing.
Colour Palette:

Logo: Features compass points extending to the edge of the frame.
Logo Sub-Brand: includes the unaltered OSGeo mark alongside the sub-brand's own mark.
Feedback Analysis: Analyzed feedback from the target audience to identify areas for improvement and innovation.
In this usability analysis, I evaluated the key aspects of user interaction with the redesigned LinkedIn banner. The following chart highlights the most important usability metrics and their impact on user experience.
Wireframe Sketches
I created initial sketches to explore different design concepts. Based on insights from the usability analysis, I developed six wireframes, highlighting the most effective features with a star. These wireframes represent various design approaches aimed at enhancing user experience and visual appeal.
High-Fidelity Mockups
Three distinct high-fidelity mockups of the LinkedIn banner were created, each incorporating varying imagery, geometric styles, and placements that align with the brand identity while individualizing it. These mockups present the necessary information in different ways and approaches. A survey will be created using these mockups to gather user feedback and refine the final design based on their input.
Usability Survey
My goal is to evaluate each banner design's effectiveness, visual appeal, and relevance. I aim to identify which aspects best represent the OSGeo Alberta Chapter, highlighting the geomatics field, OSGeo branding, and Alberta’s representation. Based on this feedback, the final prototype will be completed and uploaded onto the LinkedIn group site. This anonymous unmoderated survey allows professionals to participate at their convenience.
Survey Sections:
Demographics: Grouping our target audience and subgroups.
Feedback: Comparing three banner mockups based on representation, brand alignment, image choice, and overall representation of OSGeo Alberta Chapter.
Follow-up Questions
Measurable Feedback: Rating each banner aspect on a scale from 1 (worst) to 5 (best).
