April Newsletter

Grow and Breathe

April. April was the longest month in the classroom. April was the month with no holidays. April was a lot.

But...

April was also the month I felt like I saw the most student growth. April was the month I started to wonder if I'd done enough for this group of students. April was when I'd start to worry If the seeds of curiosity and wonder I'd try to plant in their hearts and brains would last a lifetime. April is a lot my friends but please know those seeds will last and you are doing more than enough. Remember that humans, like houseplants, need sunshine and water in order to grow and thrive. The sunshine is here, the seeds have been planted and I see your success. Thank you for all you are doing for Kansas students.

Math Awareness Month and FREE E-Book

In honor of Math awareness month, NSTA (The National Science Teaching Association) is sharing a free E-book to help support math and science integration with "Florence the Data Scientist and Her Magical Bookmobile". "Florence the Data Scientist and Her Magical Bookmobile" is a picture book for young readers 6-8 that explores and explains one of today’s most important and fastest growing professions: data science! How can recording and analyzing data for patterns help make predictions about the future? Join Beatrice as she finds out. Get your free copy and lesson suggestions here: https://www.nsta.org/domino-data-lab

Cross Cutting Concepts Video series!

The cross cutting concepts within our standards allow students to wonder and ask questions about our science content. They are the "think and link" piece that helps our littlest learners open the door to figuring out complex problems. Paul Anderson creator of The Wonder of Science site has recently released a series of mini-lessons for teachers that help us to grow what this looks like for each concept and what it might look like at different grade levels. Find his free video series here (Link).

NSTA has also released a new book that looks specifically at the Cross Cutting Concepts and a companion book study. I am planning to attend the book study and would love to have others join me! Learn more here: (Link) and if the cost is prohibitive but you are interested keep your eyes out for a fall opportunity and look for ways to connect!

NSTA Daily Do

Did you know that The National Science Teaching Association (NSTA) has free resources available on their site? The "daily do" section provides great lesson ideas complete with video supports and scaffolding for student driven sense-making. Check them out here: https://www.nsta.org/resources/daily-do

Chemistry Storylines RELEASE Dates and Professional Development

The University of Colorado, Boulder has recently announced the release date of their storylines for High School Chemistry. They are also offering several high quality professional developments for high school teachers this summer. Keep your eye out for more information on their units and find information about their professional development offerings here: (Link). Please let me know if you have questions regarding this opportunity and I am happy to support you.

Storylines

As you may have noticed several of the upcoming professional development opportunities center around the topic of storylines. Storylines are a way (not the only way) to bundle our standards and teach them in a cohesive manner. I will be sharing more about storylines in the coming months; but, in the interim here is an article from NSTA that shares a little background (Link).

AP Courses and PBL

A recent study (Link) was shared about gains on the AP Environmental Exam in courses that utilized a Project Based Learning, or Phenomena Based Learning, model and the College Board is offering a new professional development opportunity this summer to examine the integration. Learn more about the professional development here: (Link). How could this model help us to address learning loss while also supporting student-led investigations at the AP level? If interested I would encourage you to have the conversation with your administration and see if this might be a nice connection for ESSR funds coming your way.

Another Consideration for Vertical Alignment

Did you know that there is a crosswalk for AP courses and our Next Generation Science Standards? They can be found here: (Link) Other bundles for Middle School and High School can be found here (Link) and consider the appendices as a tool for vertical alignment. Check out the appendices here: (Link)

Safety Snippet

"A Safety Minute" Tips by Dr. Ken Roy - NSELA Safety Compliance Officer

“Former Illinois teacher convicted of pouring nitrogen on student” - A former Suburban Chicago HS chemistry teacher has been convicted of reckless conduct for pouring liquid nitrogen on a student during a science demonstration in 2018, injuring the youth. What happen to hazard analysis, risk assessment and safety action before doing any demonstration or lab activity??? Reviewing SDS alone should have prevented this activity from taking place place. Additional Opportunities

From Outside of KSDE

Kansas NSF EPSCoR - Ecosystems of Kansas Summer Institute

Kansas NSF EPSCoR is going to hold its annual Ecosystems of Kansas Summer Institute this summer for Kansas High School Biology and Environmental Science Teachers June 7-11, 2021 at the University of Kansas Field Station Station (https://biosurvey.ku.edu/field-station).

Teacher participants will earn a stipend of $750 for actively participating in the week’s activities and writing curriculum. In addition, a travel allowance will be provided for those living more than 1 hour away from the field station along with room and board.

While attending the institute, teachers will participate in a variety of activities from carrying out investigations and learning about current university-level research, to exploring diverse outdoor environments. Early in the week participants will be divided into groups based upon their areas of interest to work with University of Kansas researchers. These groups will spend time developing NGSS inquiry-based curriculum for their own high school classrooms. The Institute is directed by Dr. Peggy Schultz, Associate Specialist with the Kansas Biological Survey and the Environmental Studies Program (https://biosurvey.ku.edu/directory/peggy-schultz ). All KU COVID 19 protocols will be followed and masks are required.
