The Kruger National Park is also very popular during the long December/January school holidays, so should you be looking to travel during this time period, we strongly recommend that you book well in advance and consider the northern parts of the park or the Kruger's private reserves and concessions, should you desire a less crowded experience.

The Kruger National Park is regarded as the ultimate safari destination and the largest in South Africa. With almost two million hectares of pristine wilderness, the park is split into northern and southern reserves. The northern reserves are often referred to as the Greater Kruger National Park.

Researchers staying at SSLI Campus in the Kruger National Park can take advantage of opportunities in a highly diverse semi-arid savanna environment. Given the size of the park, the diversity of vegetation types and landscapes, the ecological gradients (soil nutrient, rainfall and fire regime), and the intact faunal and floral communities, the SSLI Campus is ideally located to engage in a broad range of autecological, community, and landscape research as well as for conservation science. Furthermore, the contrast between the protected areas and transforming landscapes outside the park offer significant opportunities for social-ecological studies.

Other available resources: Given the very specific requirements of working in the park and the need to be safe in the field, you will need to work with an armed game guard. Furthermore, it is often useful to have a local student assist in the research, which also contributes to human capital development in South Africa. We can assist with arranging both game guards and student assistants.

hey , incredible post and lots of amazing details. we were planning to visit kruger next year july or august. Do you think that would be a good time to be able to get the most on game drives ?

also, we want to select private game lodges , which focuses more on sightings and more of an adventure experience for us. which private lodges would you recommend?

Aside from just driving around on safari and looking for animals, the park offers visitors much more, including rest camps, shops, and restaurants. But is Kruger National Park a wheelchair accessible safari experience? During my recent visit to this South African landmark, I uncovered the best of what Kruger has for wheelchair users as a disabled safari holiday.

There are two main airports that serve Kruger National Park: Hoedspruit/Eastgate (HDS) and Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (KMIA/MQP). Kruger is also a popular self-drive destination so another option is to drive to the park from Johannesburg which will take you roughly 4 hours. Finally, it is possible to take a flight to Skukuza Airport which is in the park itself, but flight prices are more expensive. We flew into Kruger Mpumalanga after arriving at Johannesburg (O.R. Tambo International Airport), and rented a car from the AVIS at the airport to kick-off the first leg of our safari.

To stretch our legs, we made sure to stop by rest camps as we passed them. The Kruger rest camps are a great source of information as they have sighting boards which show where the Big 5 were recently spotted, to help you plan your next stop. It was because of these sighting boards that we were able to experience a rare sighting of a black hippo! Finally, we ended our first day in the park by exiting the Malale Gate (40-minutes away from our lodge), before heading back to Mvuradona Safari Lodge for a romantic fireside dinner.

Southern Africa has experienced many anthrax epidemics in the past (1). The wide expanses of savannah and large populations of wild ungulate herbivores are ideally suited for anthrax endemicity. Vestiges of the large wildlife populations and savannah ecosystems still exist today in the parks of southern Africa. One such area is the Kruger National Park (KNP), South Africa.

Isolate locations and Bernoulli regression clusters. (I) This map shows the individual isolate locations within the KNP. At the scale presented, many isolate locations overlap and may appear less dense than the actual total. (II) This map shows the geographic areas included in the Bernoulli regression for time-space cluster detection. The secondary time-space cluster for Kruger A isolates is in the middle of the park (the primary cluster included the entire park), and the primary time-space cluster for Kruger B isolates includes all of the north of the park.

Kruger B B. anthracis was very important in the epidemics of 1970 to 1981 and in the northern area of endemicity of the KNP. This epidemic began in the northern KNP and then proceeded to the central and southern areas of the park (3). In the north, isolates that were collected from 1970 to 1981 are both Kruger A and B, while the central isolates are predominantly Kruger A. From these data, we conclude that the earlier anthrax spread was an ecological or environmental progression more than a classic epidemic in which the actual pathogen dispersed. The independence of these foci was masked by correlated environmental cues.

Safari goers have the option of visiting Kruger National Park or any of the several private game reserves that are connected to the park. Animals are free to roam between Kruger and the game reserves, so you have the opportunity to see many of the same species in throughout the entire Greater Kruger area. Kruger NP is very popular with visitors who want to do a self-drive safari. The roads in Kruger are well maintained and mapped, making it is quite easy to navigate yourself through the park. Individuals visiting the private game reserves typically stay at private game reserves and go on guided safari game drives. The land in the game reserves is privately owned, so you cannot self drive in these areas. Note that there are also guided game drives available at several camps in Kruger.

If you self drive in Kruger NP, you have the luxury of travelling at your own pace and looking for animals that suit your particular interest. Some people love this freedom and enjoy tracking animals on their own. This is also the lowest cost option as you do not need to pay a guide. The disadvantages are that you cannot drive off-road to get closes to animals, you may struggle to find interesting animal sightings, and you cannot self drive at night (you must leave the park before the gates close in the evening).

Tinga was incredible. I haven't seen much of kruger but I have been too other safaris around south africa and kenya, and I would definitely say Tinga is amazing. Its worth taking a look at it. We really enjoyed our beautiful rooms, and the whole service from the hotel was amazing.. Everynight we had dinner at different spots through out the hotel, which made it really unique from other luxury hotels.

African wild dogs (Lycaon pictus) have undergone severe population reductions and are listed as endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List. Small, isolated populations have the potential to suffer from threats to their genetic diversity that may impact species viability and future survival. This study provides the first set of population-wide genomic data to address conservation concerns for this endangered species. Whole genome sequencing data were generated for 71 free-ranging African wild dogs from the Kruger National Park (KNP), South Africa, and used to estimate important population genomic parameters. Genomic diversity metrics revealed that variation levels were low; however, this African wild dog population showed low levels of inbreeding. Very few first- and second-order relationships were observed in this cohort, with most relationships falling into the third-order or distant category. Patterns of homozygosity could have resulted from historical inbreeding or a loss in genome variation due to a population bottleneck. Although the results suggest that this stronghold African wild dog population maintains low levels of inbreeding, likely due to their cooperative breeding system, it may lead to a continuous population decline when a reduced number of suitable mates are available. Consequently, the low genomic variation may influence species viability over time. This study highlights the importance of assessing population genomic parameters to set conservation priorities. Future studies should include the investigation of the potential of this endangered species to adapt to environmental changes considering the low genomic diversity in this population.

Sabi Sand

The 65,000 ha Sabi Sand Reserve shares a 50km unfenced boundary with the Kruger National Park. When the Kruger National Park was declared in 1926, the landowners of the original Sabi Game Reserve were excised and had to settle for land outside of the national park. In 1948, 14 of these conservation-minded landowners met at Mala Mala and decided to join forces and create the first-ever private nature reserve in South Africa. The eastern fence of the reserve, bordering the Kruger National Park, was removed in 1993, making the Sabi Sand Reserve part of the Greater Kruger. The land is used for photographic tourism and private leisure. For your ready-made African safari to Sabi Sand Game Reserve, click here. ff782bc1db
