Imagine you are 20 years old, fleeing your home with your husband and young child, targeted and unsafe because your husband worked for the previous government and NATO. This is the reality for Zia Gul and her family; the family we are raising money to sponsor.

The Kincardine Refugee Sponsorship Committee is a dedicated group of volunteers working through Knox Presbyterian Church and Presbyterian World Service & Development. We are in the process of sponsoring Zia Gul’s family to come to Canada and make a new life in the safety of our community. Our only source of revenue for sponsorship is through fundraising and donations.

We need to raise $45,000 to cover their first year of life in Canada. This funding is critical because sponsored refugees receive no government startup money and must even repay the cost of their travel to Canada to the government. We have sponsored three families previously, all of whom have settled in Canada and are contributing to this country which welcomed them. All have either become citizens or are in the process of becoming citizens. Many are pursuing further education at university or college. All are working.

The need is great in many parts of the world right now. Sometimes it’s hard to know what to do to help. It can feel overwhelming. Our motto is “Families helping families, one family at a time”. Your support means that you are helping us reach our goal of bringing one more family, Zia Gul’s family, to Kincardine. Help us fill another family with hope.
