Internship Site: Cancer Support Community Indiana
Cancer Support Community Central Indiana exists so that no one faces cancer alone. For over 20 years, we’ve led the charge in Indiana to build a vibrant community of cancer survivors and their loved ones. We focus on providing psychosocial support to complement medical treatments in order to nurture every part of a patient as they learn and grow and recover. With any cancer diagnosis come feelings of hopelessness and social isolation. It’s CSC’s goal to make sure cancer patients don’t have to go it alone.
Primary Responsibilities/Projects:
I am the Laughing Matters Auction Manager for CSC's 2022 annual comedy-themed fundraisor. In this role, my primary responsibility is to contact potential donors for contributions to the onsite/silent auction that will take place the day of the event, June 4th, 2022. During the event, I will be managing the onsite and silent auction by making sure all winners get their prizes.
Learning Objectives:
Before starting my internship, I identified three objectives that I hoped to gain throughout my experience. These goals were:
Communicate with diverse stakeholders
I've been able to effectively converse with stakeholders from different levels in organizations to gain sponsorships.
Demonstrate and gain transferable skills in a professional work evironment
While I have been able to refine existing transferable skills, such as communication and problem solving, I wish I had more experience in the work environment in person to gain different skills.
Determine professional fit within a health-related organization
I feel motivated and well prepared for a professional role in a health-related organization.
Personal Development:
During this experience, I've developed my time management skills. Having daily goals to accomplish for my role has allowed me to stay organized. In this role, I also learned to take breaks by moving on to something else if I felt like I was getting stuck then going back to it later, improving my time management. In this role, I've been able to contribute my capabilities and skills to the organization to bring in donations. In terms of areas for growth, I would like to be more confident in the work I'm doing. I was second guessing myself a lot in this role and questioned, "Am I doing this right?" as I went along, but I think that will come over time as I start to gain experience.
Academic Connections:
The classes I've taken throughout my collegiate career have prepared me for a professional role after graduation. I can specifically think of classes such as career preparation in health services management and capstone that have shown me not only how to excel in a role organizationally, but also how to present myself in this role. Another course I think prepared me well for this internship was heathcare ethics, since the demographic mainly works with cancer patients. Overall, my courses at IUPUI have given my knowledge to take with me to grow my professional career.
