I am a Professor of Political Science at Aarhus University. My research seeks to understand what it means to be part of a national, political community.

To answer this question, I study the political and cultural forces that define who ‘we’ are and create boundaries of belonging. Analyzing political discourse, citizenship policies, and popular conceptions of membership, my research delivers knowledge on the individual and social consequences of boundary-drawing. Much of my prior work has revolved around immigration and national belonging. Over the coming years, I am leading a project on youth and political marginalization.

I use a variety of methods crossing the quantitative-qualitative spectrum, such as computational and in-depth qualitative text analysis, survey experiments, and qualitative interviews.
