Krista Longtin, PhD, is an internationally recognized scholar in health and science communication, with a focus on faculty development and interdisciplinary education. She is an Assistant Dean for Faculty Affairs and Professional Development and Associate Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Indiana University School of Medicine, with a joint appointment in the department of Communication at Indiana University Indianapolis. As Director of Communication Competency at the largest medical school in the U.S., she leads initiatives to enhance communication skills across medical education.
Dr. Longtin’s research uses qualitative methods and applied improvisational theatre to explore how scientists, clinicians, and learners communicate, particularly in professional and community contexts. Her work has been published in Health Communication, Patient Education and Counseling Innovation, and Academic Medicine, and supported by organizations such as the National Cancer Institute and the American Medical Association.
A collaborative and engaging educator, Dr. Longtin’s teaching expands beyond traditional classrooms. She spearheads a graduate minor and faculty development programs in Communicating Science, and her public engagement efforts include partnerships with Indiana Humanities and the American Association of Anatomy. She especially enjoys serving as a mentor and sponsor to faculty and learners interested in studying and developing interdisciplinary communication skills. Dr. Longtin’s creative approaches to education and leadership have earned numerous honors, including awards from the National Communication Association and Indiana University.
