Atlas is the deuteragonist of The Hellish Cycle. For the lack of a better word; Atlas has had it rough. He had a decent family, and his life on Earth was fine for the most part, until, well, he encountered Hark as a child & became a host for an infectious curse. As a human, every so often, he was being possessed by Hark to commit countless murders- resulting in Atlas becoming a hermit as he grew older, living in solitude to prevent anyone else from getting hurt.
They don't really... remember how they died, exactly. All they remember is falling asleep at home, a vague sensation of feeling cold, then feeling unbearably hot, then waking up as a Hellbound in Hell. If they had to guess; they're pretty sure Hark got sick of his self-isolation & decided to walk his body into a snowstorm.
His time in Hell's been... well, it's been bloody cold, but that's about it, for the most part. His new form has allowed him to create his own fire & heat to keep decently warm. Other than a bit of exploring here & there; Atlas has been living alone in his own cavern for all these years, rarely interacting with the other Hellbound. A bit of a quiet & inconvenient way of existence, but it's much more bearable compared to the chaos & constant heartbreak of when he was alive.
But the more time's passed, the more he feels like there's something seriously wrong. People who've come to Hell after him have gotten out faster; while he's left behind. He's never met someone who's stuck around down here for as long as he has. For some unknown reason, he's just not reincarnating, no matter how long he's waited. The gaps in his memory are getting longer, and he's always left feeling way colder than he should, for a demon with fire running through his veins. What's going on here?
❤️Personality
Pessimistic, grumpy, stand-offish. After everything he's already been through, Atlas can't really bring it in him to believe things will get better, anytime soon. He's understandably extremely negative & worn out, seeing little point in trying to make things better, for himself or for others.
That doesn't mean he doesn't care, though. He doesn't want to care, believing that there's no point in caring, but he does. Despite his misgivings, he can't bear to sit idly by if someone needs help & there's something he can do; but he's deathly afraid of forming closer connections due to his curse, because he doesn't want to risk hurting anyone else. He often beats himself up over not being able to prevent the inevitable tragedy that surrounds his life.
When the situation calls for it, though; beyond all his loathing & cynicism; Atlas is compassionate & resourceful. He's good at strategy, and knows how to make the most out of what little resources he's got, taking into account sharing the spoils with others. Still, he's also more of the immature, dorky teenager he was before his death than he lets on; and if you push the right buttons, he acts like it, too.

Azalea: They initially had a rather... one-sided friendship. Azalea was eager to get to know the lonely demon, since he doesn't seem all that bad for someone who's been spending years in hell; while Atlas begrudgingly tolerated her presence as, while he found her annoying, he didn't have the heart to drive her away. ...And for slightly more selfish reasons, he's found that Hark's curse doesn't seem to affect him as much when Azalea's around. Even still, Atlas is rather cold & stiff, refusing to let himself get too close, because he believes she'll depart for good eventually; especially if she finds out about his curse. Meanwhile, Azalea's overbearing & doesn't truly listen to Atlas' woes & what he actually wants.
After Azalea actually found out about the curse, and the two embarking on a journey to save all souls in the three realms from Hark's plans, the two would gradually grow closer in a more genuine, sincere way. Azalea has to learn from Atlas that she needs to actually sit down & acknowledge the negative aspects of existence, and listen to what others have to say about it, if she truly wants to help others recover. Meanwhile, Atlas has to learn from Azalea that wallowing in his own misery only does so much, and that hope & compassion have more of an effect than he realises.
They'll eventually grow to be close friends; perhaps even like honourary siblings, over the course of their journey.
📚Unique Abilities
Immortality
Souls who are Undead do not age, and cannot be killed or die a second time. The only way for an undead soul to "die" is through reincarnation, as it erases most of the soul's memories; though, of course, that isn't a true death, but more a new beginning. Though they cannot be permanently hurt, instead regenerating over their wounds, they can still experience pain. Being trapped & contained somewhere torturous with no escape is about the worst punishment an Undead soul could ever face.
Hellbound Form
Hellbound have their souls manifest their forms to best suit Hell's environment. Their beastly appearances aren't a divine punishment, no; they're a matter of protection & comfort. Due to Hell currently being a freezing cavern, most, if not all Hellbound nowadays tend to take the form of furry animals adapted for the cold weather, as well as having at least some form of fire-related magic, to help with keeping themselves warm. It's not just the ability to manipulate fire, though; fire quite literally runs through their veins. Hellbound blood, as rarely as it drops considering their immortality, is notoriously scalding hot.
Hark's Curse
Well, it's a curse, not exactly an ability, but it's still something unique about him with metaphysical effects. Atlas is the current host for Hark's possession. When possessed, Atlas' body temperature lowers at an accelerating rate, and his body is unable to produce external fire through magic. Hark is able to spread these frostbite effects when possessing Atlas by touching any other soul, Hellbound or Heavenbound, decreasing their body temperatures as well, leaving them immobilised by the cold. Hark is essentially taking these souls' ability to keep themselves warm- the Hellbounds' fire-related abilities & the Heavenbounds' ambient light- and inverting it to keep them cold.
What's special about Atlas is that, as Hark's possession host, or "patient zero" of the frostbite infection, so to speak; Atlas is the only one that Hark can puppeteer. He needs Atlas' body to do anything. But it's Hark's influence that's keeping Atlas trapped in Hell here, unable to reincarnate- and those also infected by Hark's frost find themselves unable to reincarnate, as well. The only way for the curse to be fully broken is for Hark to be destroyed.
