If you want a legendary wired audio experience with deep bass and a collapsible design for audiophile listening, choose Koss Porta Pro Black; if you need reliable AM/FM radio reception with simple controls and all-day comfort for seniors or outdoor work, choose UMUTOO A1.
• Koss Porta Pro Black: Strength is its iconic collapsible design and 40+ years of proven high-fidelity audio performance with deep bass; Trade-off is the lack of wireless connectivity and no built-in radio features. This pick is for purists who prioritize sound quality and portability in a compact package.
• UMUTOO A1: Strength is its dedicated AM/FM digital tuner with preset stations and passive noise cancellation via memory foam ear cups; Trade-off is the reliance on AA batteries and a bulkier over-ear form factor. This pick is for users who want to listen to broadcast radio without needing a phone or music source.
The Koss Porta Pro Black is a piece of audio history that has stood the test of time since 1984. Its primary appeal lies in its ability to deliver breathtaking high-fidelity audio across a frequency range of 15 Hz to 25 kHz. The dynamic drivers are tuned to provide deep bass and a remarkable midrange, making it an excellent choice for anyone who cares about the nuances of their music. The 30-millimeter audio driver size works in tandem with a low impedance of 16 ohms to ensure that even older devices can drive these headphones effectively without needing extra amplification.
For the user who travels frequently or values desk space, the collapsible design is a game-changer. The unique folding mechanism allows the headphones to shrink down significantly, fitting easily into the included protective carrying case. This makes them one of the most portable on-ear headphones available. The adjustable headband features multi-pivoting ear plates and two adjustable temporal-comfort zone pads. These pads shift pressure points to perfectly balance the weight on your ears, ensuring a secure fit that doesn't cause fatigue during long listening sessions.

However, this product is strictly wired. With a 3.5 mm mini-phone stereo connector, it requires a direct line to your audio source. There is no Bluetooth version available in this specific model, and there are no wireless capabilities whatsoever. If your workflow involves moving around a room without cables, or if you need to connect to a smartphone wirelessly, this headphone will not work for you. Additionally, while the passive isolation is decent due to the on-ear design, it does not offer active noise cancellation or the heavy-duty sealing found in over-ear models designed for blocking out loud environments. It is best suited for quiet offices, home listening, or travel where you want to hear your music clearly without interference from external noise.
The UMUTOO A1 serves a completely different purpose, acting as a dedicated radio receiver rather than just a music playback device. It features a robust AM/FM digital radio tuner that includes both manual and auto-search functions. You can quickly scan for your favorite stations and save them as presets, allowing for one-click access to your preferred programming. This is particularly useful for commuters, retirees, or workers who want to stay updated with news or talk shows without relying on a smartphone or internet connection. The inclusion of a premium DSP filter chip ensures stable reception with minimal static, delivering crystal clear sound whether you are mowing the lawn, cycling, or working at a desk.
Comfort is a major focus for this over-ear model. The ear muffs have been updated with wider, softer memory foam that is designed to be worn for an entire day without discomfort. The adjustable head strap accommodates various head sizes, and the passive noise cancellation provided by the cushioned ear cups helps block out surrounding noise, which is essential for focusing on the radio signal or enjoying music in busy environments. The device weighs only 165 grams, making it surprisingly light for an over-ear headset, and it folds up to a palm-sized dimension for easy storage in bags or suitcases.
This product is powered by two AA batteries, which are not included but are universally available. This battery operation means you don't need to worry about charging cycles or finding a power outlet, making it ideal for extended use outdoors or in areas with unreliable electricity. However, the trade-off is that you must manage battery life and replace them periodically. It also lacks modern wireless features like Bluetooth; instead, it uses a 3.5 mm AUX jack to connect to external devices when radio signals are weak or when you want to play music from a player. While it offers a simple, intuitive interface with individual buttons and an LCD display, it is not designed for high-end audiophile music listening compared to dedicated wired headphones, but rather for practical, everyday broadcasting.
• Best for High-Fidelity Music: Koss Porta Pro Black wins with its 15 Hz–25 kHz frequency response and 30mm dynamic drivers designed for deep bass.
• Best for Radio Listening: UMUTOO A1 is the clear winner, featuring built-in AM/FM tuning, preset stations, and a DSP filter for stable reception.
• Best for Portability (Foldable): Both fold, but Koss is lighter and comes with a dedicated soft case, making it more travel-ready for daily carry.
• Best for Battery Independence: UMUTOO A1 runs on standard AA batteries, eliminating the need for charging cables or proprietary power bricks.
• Best for Long-Wearing Comfort: UMUTOO A1 uses wider memory foam ear cups and an over-ear design, which often reduces pressure on the head compared to on-ear clamps.
• Best for Wired Simplicity: Koss Porta Pro Black offers a direct, zero-latency 3.5 mm connection without any menus or settings to configure.
• Best for Outdoor Work: UMUTOO A1 is superior for tasks like mowing or landscaping where hearing the environment or having hands-free radio is necessary.
• Best Value for Audio Purists: Koss provides a lifetime warranty and legendary status for those who care deeply about sound engineering.
I would choose the Koss Porta Pro Black for my own setup because I value the integrity of the audio signal above all else. The collapsible design fits perfectly into my travel routine, and the sound signature is unmatched for music lovers who want clarity and depth. However, if you are looking for a device specifically for zoom calls or general office communication where you need to switch between radio and music without a phone, the UMUTOO A1 might be too bulky and lacking in microphone integration. Ultimately, for a pure audio experience that lasts decades, the Koss is the tool I trust, but for practical utility and radio access, the UMUTOO is the smarter choice.
Neither model is explicitly marketed as a conference headset with a boom microphone. The Koss Porta Pro Black relies on the 3.5mm output of your device, so call quality depends entirely on your computer or phone's mic. The UMUTOO A1 is designed for listening to radio and music, not for two-way voice communication.
No, the UMUTOO A1 operates on two standard AA batteries, which are widely available at any grocery or convenience store, unlike proprietary rechargeable packs.
No, the Koss Porta Pro Black is a wired-only device with a 3.5 mm plug. To use it with a phone, you would need a separate Bluetooth adapter plugged into the headphone jack, which may introduce latency or compatibility issues.
Yes, the over-ear design with memory foam ear cups provides passive noise cancellation that helps block out ambient sounds, making it easier to focus on the radio or music without distractions.
