Korhogo Rec is a free space for creation and a net label based in France that operates under the umbrella of the « Interzone », a world cohered by the aesthetic of William Burroughs. The label, born in 2021, already supports thousands of productions in photography, music (including « illbient and weird IDM ») and video clips. The music can be described as « Ritual Jazz in Interzone, Burroughs Illbient, Industrialistan IDM, Damaged/Worried Electronica ».
Born in the year 2021, Korhogo Rec is a web-based label and creative hub steeped into the aesthetic of William Burroughs' Interzone. Mauk Tenieb, a French artist and performer, founded the label to foster a spectrum of expressions, including photography, music such as « illbient and weird IDM » and video clips. The sounds crafted by the label fuse « Ritual Jazz in Interzone, Burroughs Illbient, Industrialistan IDM and Damaged/Worried Electronica ». To enter the Korhogo Rec universe, an artist must submit a SoundCloud link, an art cover in 1,500 x 1,500 JPG format, a photo with the handwritten statement: « All right to join the Korhogo Rec adventure! I accept my work to be published under the Korhogo Rec label. I may participate in promotional events and shared stages, as I am able. Here is my PayPal ID to receive any music income directly, if applicable », original music in WAV format (with no external samples exceeding two seconds) and lyrics. Lyrics must be written in one sentence per line, without a final punctuation. If accepted, the artist will be granted the rights to utilize terms associated with Korhogo Rec.

The Interzone, a nod to Burroughs' famed region, serves as an overarching term for a free-flowing world of intriguing contradictions, offering a wealth of inspiration.
The name « Korhogo » ignites the imagination with its beautiful sound and symbolizes the contrasts of Western Africa - light and dark, urban and desert, and the convergence of intense sun and industrial aesthetics found in other parts of the world, such as the Arabic world, India and Pakistan.
The « Rec » in Korhogo Rec stands for capturing memories, including pictures, music, videos and diaries. Memory is vital, and the artists aim to create a lasting imprint. (A gonzo-like way?)
Illbient, a genre that emerged in the 1990s, melts ambient vibes, heady dub, glitched or ritualistic hip-hop, and the instinctive and technical styles of jazzcore and free jazz. The genre boasts an industrial flavor, sometimes with an oriental twist (Is Taffey Lewis’ Bar ringing a bell?), and is linked to musicians from the urban areas of the East Coast, Great Lakes, and England, including Scorn (featuring Mick Harris, John Zorn, Bill Laswell), DJ Spooky, Skiz Fernando Jr and, somehow, one of his kind Muslimgauze. Rather than a coined term, many prefer to describe their work as musical experimentation. Ipecac Recordings, with its highly recognizable and productive artists, shares a similar rich aesthetic with illbient. This label, along with pillars like Mike Patton and John Zorn, harkens back to an era with figures like William Gibson, Björk, Godflesh, The Melvins, Charles Burns, Detroit techno artists, crossover and fusion genres, and the early days of anarco-Internet, embodying a diverse and experimental spirit illbient also captures.
IDM (Intelligent Dance Music), on the other hand, showcases overtalented musicians like Autechre duet, Squarepusher and Aphex Twin. It is renowned for its rhythmic, poetic or hypnotic complexity. IDM can also be considered a branch of the Interzone ethos, with its rich, diverse, science-fiction-like, existential, mystic and heavy vibes.
Peace!
Mauk Tenieb
