During the summer of 2019, as part of the course "Physics and Technology of the Controlled Thermonuclear Fusion" I worked on studying the motion of charged particles inside magnetic mirror fields. Such fields can trap charged particles in a given region of space and have been proposed as a possible way to fusion. In this project I used a perturbation method (guiding-center theory) to approximate analytically the orbit of the particles. The motion equations were then solved numerically and the results were used to illustrate the accuracy limits of the guiding-center theory approximation.
