What makes us uniquely human? Who are we? Why are we the way we are? Where did we come from and where do we go from now? I believe so strongly that answers to these crucial questions in humanity lay in the investigations of language.

Welcome to my page! My name is Kohei, a PhD Candidate working in the domain of Psycho-Neurolinguistics at the University of Groningen (Netherlands) and Macquarie University (Australia). I am funded by the fantastic joint-PhD program called IDEALAB (International Doctorate in Experimental Approaches to Language And Brain).
I am fascinated by all aspects of language and cognition, but especially interested in...
Investigating how humans comprehend and produce language in real-time, using various experimental techniques including EEG (electroencephalography), Eye-tracking, and the Self-paced Reading paradigm.
Examining how the language system interacts with other cognitive sub-domains such as Perception (e.g., vision, audition, olfaction) and Motor system (e.g., proprioception, spatial cognition, vestibular system).
Probing how the structures of different languages may impose differential restrictions on our cognitive architecture from cross-linguistic perspectives.
Inquiring into the long-lasting 'Grammar-Parser' debate, exploring ways in which they can be unified as two sides of the same coin, rather than the more traditional division-of-labor view.
I was born and raised in Tottori, Japan, the least populated prefecture out of all 47 (so the opposite of Tokyo!). I grew up in a very rural and small but gorgeous coastal town, Iwami, where we boast the magnificent beauty of the Uradome Kaigan coast, one of UNESCO Global Geoparks.
The house I lived in is located literally INSIDE the Geopark (6 seconds away from the beach). The header photos of this website are all from the same place of Uradome Kaigan, but they showcase very different 'faces' of it. Just like the Uradome Kaigan, our language and cognition are highly multifaceted.
