Kobo Firmware Downloads gets the latest official firmware download links from the Kobo API. It also provides links to older firmware versions and shows the latest version available to each affiliate.

There are separate firmware downloads for each hardware version. Officially a given release may only be for select devices but unofficially other devices with the same hardware version may also work. However this is not guaranteed and you should read the associated discussion thread carefully before potentially bricking your device.

Also see Kobo Firmware Downloads for the latest official firmware and changelog links, automatically updated directly from Kobo servers. It can also show the firmware versions for different affiliates, a list of all released versions for each device, all in one page. This site also has useful charts showing things like versions by affiliate and version availability by device.

The firmware download link contains information as Mark (kobo), Date or Affiliate and Firmware Version.

Hover with your mouse on the download button and make sure you download the right firmware for your device. the download link info will be at the lower left corner of your web browser.

Your Kobo is running an updated firmware/database version. As calibre does not know about this updated firmware, database editing is disabled, to prevent corruption. You can still send books to your Kobo with calibre, but deleting books and managing collections is disabled. If you are willing to experiment and know how to reset your Kobo to Factory defaults, you can override this check by right clicking the device icon in calibre and selecting "Configure this device" and then the "Attempt to support newer firmware" option. Doing so may require you to perform a Factory reset of your Kobo.

My Mini has been a bit hit and miss for a while, so I figured I'd factory reset it - which then meant it couldn't be set up over Wifi, something I didn't know. One trip through Google later and I discovered others who'd had this trouble had replaced the firmware with that of the Glo, which is for all intents and purposes "current."

To manually update, just download the update for your specific model from the Kobo Firmware Downloads page, and then extract the downloaded file and place the contents of the update folder into the .kobo folder on your Kobo device. If done properly, it will detect the files and automatically apply the update after you disconnect it from your computer.

One of the unnecessary intrusions on privacy with Kobo is that it requests registration with the company site for use of the web browser and firmware updates. In addition, Kobo keeps its own list of your purchases from its site. Lee Yingtong Li blogs a simple way to bypass the registration while still making use of the site:

and exit and disconnect the Kobo from the computer. All functionality will then be enabled.

When you tap the sync icon, the sync fails, but the Kobo will still check privately

for firmware updates and give installation instructions.

Kobo firmware apparently has a checkered history, full of changes -- not all of them for the better. You may want to replace buggy firmware or to change to a version that works better with your preferred hacker scripts. For information about each firmware release and how to install older versions, see the Kobo Hacks and Utilities Index.

These instructions are intended for devices on Kobo firmware 4.6+. If you're on a lower firmware and want to remain on that lower firmware, you should probably try Kobo Start Menu instead, at your own risk.

NickelMenu will persist through official firmware updates, while KFMon will not. You will need to reinstall KFMon every time you perform a Kobo firmware update, whether that be by installing it separately or by re-following these instructions.

Since 3.18.0 there have been two new firmwares for the Kobo eInk devices. For the very recently released firmware release 3.19.5761 I have updated my collection of patches and features. As with previous mega-package, I prepared updates for all three hardwares, Mark4 (Glo), Mark5 (Aura), and Mark6 (GloHD), but only the one for Mark6 is tested by myself.

That involves a few steps, depending on what you want to remove. If you want to remove the firmware modifications, simply put an original firmware into three .kobo for and it will be flashed. That will not delete your books or reading data and should suffice in practically all cases. If there are still problems you might need to remove tracts of the KSM08, too.

I had a quick look at this patch and might return to it. But meantime after I uninstalled per your instructions (plus also user script delete_ksm.sh) and I am now back on the stock firmware, I still have zero margins while reading a purchased kobo epub. With one or two pixels disappearing under the left hand bezel.

Is this something from the mega patch I still need to remove in some way?

Basically Kobo is running a GNU/Linux system with armhf architecture (but it's a kernel 2.6 with system-V style boot, not systemd, etc), probably built using Linaro. Normally when you connect and disconnect to it, or at boot, it will scan for the presence of a specific file called KoboRoot.tgz in the "hidden" directory .kobo, on the data (books) filesystem exported by USB gadget. Once you disconnect the Kobo, it will uncompress this tar archive to /. If the archive contains new files and directories, those files and directories will be added. If it contains already existing files, it will overwrite those files.

This KoboRoot.tgz isn't a magic backdoor. It's the way Kobo is implementing, very openly, its own upgrades: when Kobo Desktop gets a new update (eg: -update-4.19.14123.zip), it leaves a new KoboRoot.tgz in .kobo. There's also a "firmware" upgrade part (ie: a new kernel, along with U-Boot etc. ). You really shouldn't mess with this part.

A Kobo beta tester has posted a new firmware for the Aura One over on MobileRead. He reports, and I can confirm, that this firmware adds the promised support for OverDrive ebooks (as well as other features).

An original Kobo Clara SD card or a copy (e.g. via dd) is recommended. The unpartitioned space at the beginning of the SD card contains the E-ink panel waveform information. This information is device specific and is copied to /lib/firmware/imx/epdc/epdc.fw on boot. See the original Pull Request for more information.

When I want to read my Kindle, Nook or Kobo eBooks, I go back to the Kobo firmware and read them there, with the help of Calibre. That Aura HD display is very nice. You can install the Kindle or Nook apps on this SD card setup, but I prefer the Kobo firmware. You could install your favorite eReader on this SD card setup, of course. YMMV!

One little quirk you should know about - if you run Kobo with the SD card in the slot, your Kobo firmware will read your card and copy the image of EVERY Logos resource you have downloaded into the Kobo library! You can't open those resources in Kobo, of course, but you will suddenly have what seems like a much larger library. It may also make it harder to find your Kobo books. So, I find it easier to take out the SD card when I use Kobo. Then all those Logos icons don't appear.

In order to do so, we will leverage the Clara HD's firmware upgrade process. The upgrade process works by downloading a firmware upgrade to .kobo/KoboRoot.tgz in the internal storage. Upon a reboot, if this file exists, it will be extracted over the root filesystem, replacing existing files with replacements from the tgz file.

We need, then, to obtain a copy of the firmware to start with. If you imaged the internal microSD card as in part 1, you may be able to simply mount and access the image. The easier way, however, is to download the firmware patch directly from Kobo.

On the Clara HD, select Settings from the menu, then Device information and note the Software version, then download the corresponding firmware patch from the above link. The Clara HD is a Mark 7 device, so choose that link.

/etc/inittab is the main file that we will be patching to introduce our custom code. However, in previous versions of the Kobo firmware, this file was not present, and so needed to be extracted from the device.

The /opt directory does not exist by default on the Kobo, so this is a convenient location to store our custom files where they will not be overwritten by firmware updates. (If /etc/inittab is not present in firmware updates, this also means our changes will persist across updates.)

The long-awaited arrival of InkBox OS 2.0, the operating system designed to replace standard firmware on Kobo and Kindle e-readers, is finally here. Built upon the solid foundation of Alpine Linux 3.10, InkBox OS 2.0 introduces a range of exciting features and enhancements. With its user-friendly interface and optimal e-paper screen optimization, this update is set to redefine your eBook reading experience.

Most of the customers involved are using Windows 7, and Internet Explorer or an alternative browser like Firefox or Chrome - but we've had this issue occur at least once for someone using Windows 8 and twice for people with Windows 10. We also helped someone with this issue using Mac OSX 10.11. This issue has been reported mainly with Kobo Aura HD or Aura H2O, but also with Kobo Glo and Kobo Glo HD. The Kobo firmware has varied, some were using version 3.18.0 - some were using older versions. One frustrating aspect to this issue is that despite having a number of these exact devices on hand for testing, we have been unable to reproduce the issue on any of our workstations. There also doesn't seem to be a clear pattern to the titles involved. ff782bc1db
