ECTS Laboratory was established in September 2022 at Kyungpook National University following the appointment of Prof. Hyungseok Nam. The laboratory focuses on developing energy conversion and thermal system technologies that contribute to carbon neutrality, carbon resource circulation, and sustainable energy systems.
Our research covers thermochemical conversion processes, including pyrolysis, gasification, combustion, and fluidized-bed reactions, for the sustainable utilization of biomass, organic waste, sewage sludge, plastic waste, and electronic waste. Through these processes, we aim to convert low-value or problematic waste resources into useful energy carriers, syngas, biochar, fuels, and value-added products. In addition, ECTS conducts research on CO₂ capture and utilization, catalytic conversion, waste-to-energy systems, and environmental assessment. Based on expertise in thermal-fluid engineering, reaction engineering, fluidization engineering, and carbon management technologies, we seek to develop practical and scalable solutions for clean energy production, resource recovery, and greenhouse gas reduction. Beyond these core research areas, ECTS also performs studies on heat exchanger design, thermal analysis, hydrodynamic analysis, and process simulation. These approaches are applied to improve the design, optimization, and scale-up of energy conversion systems, fluidized-bed reactors, combustion systems, gasification processes, and CO₂ utilization technologies.
ECTS Laboratory actively promotes international research collaboration with universities and research institutes in the United States, the United Kingdom, China, and Southeast Asian countries, including the Philippines and Thailand. Through joint research, researcher exchange, and collaborative project development, we aim to expand our research impact beyond Korea and contribute to global efforts toward sustainable energy and carbon neutrality.
ECTS Laboratory strives to become a leading research group in the fields of waste-to-energy, fluidized-bed engineering, carbon-neutral thermal systems, CO₂ capture and utilization, thermal system design and analysis, and international collaborative research for sustainable energy systems.
