Each piece of art was created in conjunction with each piece. Synesthesia is the neurodivergent connection between them.

Respiration is shared amongst all living things, but they all have struggled to breathe for the last few years, even decades. Our environment suffocates from pollution, people suffocate from isolation and illness, and our spirit suffocates from lack of rest. In this piece, the instruments all breathe together as one but each have their own individual struggles along the way. Take a deep breath as this piece will make you forget to breathe from anticipation.

Atelophobia, the fear of imperfection, is something all of us can relate to. And the only way to overcome it is to accept and love who you are, even if that means you are weak. We all have to grow from somewhere, so the more you honestly own up to your fears and anxiety, the more you will realize what it has to say.

Duet for Bass Clarinet and Marimba
Duration: about 5 minutes
Program Notes
This piece was inspired by my exploration for two dark woody instruments with wide registers. Though this duet is an unusual combination, I felt like they both could accurately represent the resilience everyone has displayed throughout the year of 2020. It begins with a frustrated cry from the clarinet and a somber response in the marimba. This transfers into a questioning development that brings on more frustration, only to realize that everything is going to be alright no matter what happens. The development of this piece leads to the contentment of existing in the present and not worrying about what the future holds.

Electro Acoustics
Duration: about 5 minutes
Program Notes
This is an electro-acoustic piece inspired by Vampire Weekend's song, Lord Ullin's Daughter, which uses a poem as it's storyline and then has layered tracks of a thunderstorm, piano, and various other sounds beneath. I wanted to create a piece that would use Arthur Rimbaud's synesthetic poem, Vowels, and layer organically-recorded vintage-sounding tracks versus modern synth tracks underneath to describe the senses described in the poem. It promotes not feeling texture with your eyes, but with your ears.

Full Orchestra
Duration: about 5 minutes
Program Notes
This is my first finalized full orchestra piece. I'm hoping to get a live recording of it as soon as COVID lets up a bit and we can have the entirety of the orchestra back on stage safely. The word Ceraunophile describes someone who is obsessed with thunder storms and lightening, like myself. I've always found storms as comforting and beautiful, but powerful and fearsome. Nature has always been something I've respected, admired, and feared, and I strive to know more about it the older I become. This piece is a musical description of what I experience synesthetically during a storm and I hope my listeners are taken on a deeper journey inside of nature's wonders.

When considering the definition of an Apparition- the appearance of something unexpected like a ghost- this piece is based upon the feelings that grow inside when you enter the presence of an unknown entity or even someone you don’t recognize but feel uncomfortable around. In the metaphor of a ghost, the piece envelopes a dark cloud that has no form, just as your emotions are unpredictable in an unknown situation, i.e.- a haunted house. In the metaphor of the apparition being a person, this world is full of so many masks that humans wear daily. The only time you get to see their true face is when you least expect it, and it can be quite frightening, like an apparition. Therefore, my message is that we need to learn to accept ourselves for who we are or learn how to develop our character in order to improve our existence. The art I created for this piece is my interpretation of an anaglyph x-ray of a person. This depicts how we see the mask of a human on the outside, but we see the inner monster underneath at the same time.
This piece was written for my good friend, Austin Ruff, who premiered this piece as the horn player in a trio with a pianist and cellist.

Duet for 2 Pianos
Duration: about 5 minutes
Program Notes
This piece is about the abyss of our minds, with bitonality that merges. There are certain concepts that we avoid just because they don’t apply to us or they disturb us so much that you don’t want to think about the consequences. For example: internal/personal conflicts, war, poverty, medical disasters, etc. We consider some of these things beyond our comprehension, so we do our best to put them in the back-most of our thoughts, so we don’t have to think about them. They end up festering into a monster beyond our control and as curious as we may be about our deepest thoughts, the fear that follows them overpowers our curiosity. So, one piano is in Ab melodic minor representing Curiosity while the other piano is in E melodic minor representing Fear. Throughout the piece, it describes our thought process and conveys that our fear conquers our mind. I also have synesthesia, so for me curiosity in Ab melodic minor portrays a crimson red, and in contrast, fear in E melodic minor portrays a disgusting, deathly algae green.
