The poem Spellbound by Emily Brontë brings her readers into a single moment in time. The readers are trapped with the speaker and the various interpretations as to what spell the speaker has a variety of interpretations. But whatever the spell and for whatever reason, the speaker makes it clear that she is held captive by a spell that immobilizes her even though there seems to be an impending doom. The speaker knows that something dreadful is coming her way, and yet she is unable to move.

Personent hodie is a Christmas carol originally published in the 1582 Finnish song book Piae Cantiones. The carol became more prominent in England after being arranged for unison voices and orchestra in 1916 by Gustav Holst (1874–1934), where in its organ reduction it is often used as a processional hymn in church and cathedral services.
James W. Knox adds a rhythmic and triumphant flare to the piece adding three trumpets and percussion.

‘Lines on Ale’ is believed by some to have been written in 1848 at a tavern in Lowell, Massachusetts. This poem, like many of Poe’s, feels quite personal. What’s different in this one, in comparison to some of his better-known poems, is that it’s focusing on the result of Poe’s sorrow rather than that sorrow itself.

Written for SATB divisi a cappella Ernest Christopher Dowson (1867-1900) was a 19th century English writer who aligned himself with other literary and artistic figures of the time who were, collectively, called Decadents. In his short lifetime he was a writer of short stories, novelist and poet and he also carried out a number of translations of French novels into English. Dowson's poems often are about tracing the sorrow of unreciprocrated love and are the source of phrases such as "gone with the wind" and "days of wine and roses." The poem, Vitae Summa Brevis Spem Nos Vetat Incohare Longam (The brief sum of life forbids us the hope of enduring long), was written in 1896, and was taken from a quotation from one of the Odes of Horace,(Book I, Ode 4, line 15) a well-known Roman poet that lived 65-8 b.c.e

Silent Night—or Stille Nacht in the original German—was created because Josef Mohr (a foster child who grew up in a Catholic Church in Salzburg) needed a carol for worship. On Christmas Eve of 1818, Mohr visited Gruber with a poem he had written a few years earlier. Franz Gruber (a local school teacher and organist at Old Saint Nicholas Church) quickly arranged the song to be played on a guitar with a choir because the church organ was broken. That evening at Midnight Mass, Gruber strapped on his guitar and led the congregation at St. Nicholas in the first rendition of Silent Night. The original arrangement was a bit faster than the slow, reflective version of the song we know today. Today, Silent Night is perhaps the most famous Christmas carol in history. This arrangement is filled with lush harmonies, but with the intent of keeping it traditional and sweet to the ear. All is Calm (Silent Night)

Brigid of Kildare, known as Muire na nGael (Mary of the Irish) is the secondary patron national saint of Ireland. She lived from approx 451 to 525 AD. Born of a court-official father and slave mother, she is credited as being Ireland's first nun, founding several monasteries, and with being generous and compassionate, and a peace-maker. There are many legends about her care for people and the earth, working with cows, milking, making butter, brewing, carrying a torch, weaving crosses from rushes and spreading a miraculous cloak. Traditional Hymn to St. Brigid Words by Mother Cecilia, Brigidine Convent, Goresbridge
Hymn to St. Brigid Far above enthroned in glory Sweetest Saint of Erin’s Isle See thy children kneel before thee Turn on us a Mother’s smile. Sancta Mater, hear our pleading Faith and hope and holy love Sweet St. Brigid, Spouse of Jesus, Sent to us from Heaven above. Sweet St. Brigid, Erin’s children, Far and near o’er land and sea In the world and in the cloister Fondly turn with love to thee. The Balloon of the Mind is scored for SSAA divisi, Flute, Piano, Synthesizer and Percussion.
A poet's struggle to write is one of the last places one would think to draw inspiration; yet, in W.B. Yeat's poem "The Balloon of the Mind," the narrator does just that. The four-lined poem, using personification, analogy, and an overarching metaphysical conceit (excessive pride in oneself), manages to expose the hard work and dedication required to write a poem.

Thy Kingdom Come is a powerful and uplifting piece taken from The Lord's Prayer from Matthew 6: 10 "Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven" The repetitive nature of the piece invites God's will in the world and opens to what God wants for your life. It also gives a sense of longing of His second coming and fully establishing God's reign forever and ever.

Snowflakes by Mary Mapes Dodge (1831-1905) Whenever a snowflake leaves the sky It turns and turns to say “good-bye;” “Good-bye, dear cloud, so cool and gray!” Then lightly travels on its way. And when a snowflake finds a tree, “Good-day,” it says —“Good-day to thee! Thou art so bare and lonely, dear, I’ll rest and call my comrades here.” But when a snowflake brave and meek, Lights on a rosy maiden’s cheek, It starts— “How warm and soft the day! ‘Tis Summer!”— and it melts away.

Old Man Winter is a personification of winter, and the name is a common language we use during the winter season. Throughout history, the characters of the "old man" can be seen in both literature and popular culture. He is usually depicted as an old man, often blowing winter over the landscape with his breath, or simply freezing the landscape with his very presence. Composer, James W. Knox, takes an anonymous poem about Jack Frost (another common association with winter) and uses the line, " Old Man Winter, a crystal-coldness tear, Old Man Winter, a winter's night is near." The whimsical piece takes you on a journey of a winter's night!

‘The Bells’ by Edgar Allan Poe is a musical poem. In it, the poet depicts the various sounds bells make and the events they symbolize. Composer, James W. Knox, breaks it down into four sections. The first movement, Sleigh Ride is light-hearted, youthful and filled with delight. Poe may have been inspired to write this piece by Marie Louise Shew, who helped care for Poe’s wife while she was dying. She may have suggested to the poet to use ringing bells as the initial starting point from which to write. The poem has a distinct musical quality which was no doubt influenced by the sound and rhythm of the ringing bells. In the first part, Poe describes how the sky, the “heavens” seems to “Twinkle / With a crystalline delight”. Generally, this image is related to one of youth and newness. Everything feels pure, joyful, and new. As the poem progresses, the poem changes drastically and the images get darker, alluding to age. Sleigh Ride (movement one) can be performed separately. The entire poem (other three movements) will be available in the new year, 2024. Written for TBB, Trombone, Piano and Percussion

‘Warm Summer Sun’ by Mark Twain is a poem that expresses the process of aging and life, all the way to life’s final moments. The wording involved in this representation of life shows that the journey does come with hardships, but it is a beautiful concept. The quickness of the poem mimics, as well, the rapid speed that life can take, so underneath the wonder expressed regarding life, there is also the caution to hold to it fully since it can prove fleeting. From beginning to end, though, the beauty of life remains a grounding theme to this poem. Written for SATB (divisi), Oboe and Piano (also available with Horn in F)
