Another point is that when you go up on a roof you should be using the pick of your axe or halligan for an inspection hole...this lets you know if there is fire directly below you it also allows you to monitor the smoke and conditions changing in your area of egress...do this when going up on the roof and you will see quickly if there is fire in the knee walls and therefore no need to go higher on the roof to vent.
