The purpose of this journal is to chronicle my progress through my assessments in the KNB227 Digital Technologies unit. In this unit, I will be going through the process pipeline of working with motion capture technologies, the techniques involved, and the challenges to overcome. My class and I will be working on different aspects of motion capture, from the live performance studio capturing data to using the data in 3D software and real-time engines. During this undertaking, I will be utilizing various virtual production tools such as Vicon Shogun motion capture software, Motion Builder retargeting software, and Unreal Engine. This journal will be submitted in two parts, one for each assessment. The final goal of assessment two is to have captured a live-action dance performance in motion capture and use the collected data to create a music video with an abstracted human dancer in Unreal Engine.
Assessment 1, will be learning about motion capture, the tools used, and the processes involved. For the final submission of assessment 1, I will need to demonstrate my understanding of these tools and processes and propose a way in which I could abstract the character for the final music video in assessment 2. Additionally, I have been tasked with proposing a scene in which the abstracted character could be dancing.
Assessment 2, will involve putting our newly learned understanding of motion capture to the test. For this assessment, we will have to capture, retarget, clean animations, and finally abstract the character in a unique way. This part of the project will be done in groups, with each group working together to create a final music video cut into time segments showcasing their cleaned and abstracted animation.
