I've been surfing the internet for 20 years. I've never felt unsafe for 20 years. I've never been scammed once in 20 years. I've never had my accounts hacked in 20 years. I've never had an identity theft in 20 years. Nope... everything under control, everything was fine.
1 year of Mozilla 2-step verification… I lost my account. The codes in the authenticator are always wrong, just like the backup codes. None of the codes are correct. So I can't get in anymore. What is presented as security and protection has taken over my account and locked me out, something that has not yet happened to criminals.
Who or what is criminal then? I believe that I would rather come into contact with scammers than with the so-called account security.
Now there is not much to regret with Mozilla. That account did nothing more than synchronize Firefox. I generally use Chrome, but I like variety and an adventure, so I sometimes drive around the internet with Edge or Firefox. And every browser has its account. So security went wrong with Mozilla. Result: lost account. And although it is not a big loss, that security has managed to make me anxious and scared. When I think that this could also happen with Google or Microsoft, I get scared. My Google account is good for 2 blogs, 2 youtube channels, an email address, Google drive and documents, Google photos, maps, Agenda, this website and the complete connection, including credit card, between my smart phone and play store. If I ever have the same problem there, I will lose more than half of my internet activity.
Same with Microsoft. My account is ages old. I still have an account with 15Gb of drive storage (nowadays it's 5Gb). In addition to my Outlook address, I even have an old Hotmail address that is still active. My entire PC is also connected to Microsoft. Imagine that happening to me there... that security locks me out. I can't bear to think about it. Then I'll really lose a lot.
Security has succeeded in 1 year where criminals haven't succeeded in 20 years... I'm worried, insecure and yes, even a little scared.
So I'm considering turning off 2-step verification everywhere and doing it the way I used to. Keep a close eye on everything myself, add e-mail addresses to haveibeenpwned.com and change passwords very often.
