Information for Parents and Guardians

REMINDERS FOR SPECTATORS AND PARENTS

Snacks for Golf Matches: We ask that each player donate 8 snacks and 8 drinks to the team.  Please give the snacks and drinks to Coach Berry ASAP, preferably before the first match.  Typical snacks could be something like cheese/peanut butter crackers or sliced fruit.  Drinks can be water or Gatorade. Coach Berry will keep all the snacks/drinks and distribute them during the matches.

Golf Apparel: Players will have to opportunity to purchase KMS golf shirts and apparel.

Keep up with text messages: Visit remind.com/join and enter @gd42g6 along with your mobile phone number. You'll get text notifications at the number you entered.  I will also send out emails with important announcements, like practice cancellations due to weather.

Email: berryd@gcsnc.com if you have any questions or concerns.  Please let Coach Berry know if your child will NOT be able to attend any practices or matches AS SOON as you can.

Matches: Be mindful of how long travel time is to some of these courses.  Some can be quite far away, so make sure you leave in plenty of time to get to the match.  If you plan on having someone picking up your child to carpool, the office will need a note from the parent or guardian giving permission to ride with that parent.

GCS Golf Rules/Reminders

Middle School Golf  Rules (2022)

• All matches will consist of nine holes.

• Coaches will contact each other prior to the match to verify the number of golfers they may bring to the course. The head coach will designate six (6) players to represent the team during the match. The top four (4) scores from among the six designated players will count towards the team’s cumulative score. Tiebreaker will be the score of the 4th player. If a tie still exists after comparing the sores of the 4th player, the score of the 5th player will be used. If a ties still exists after comparing the scores of the 5th player, the score of the 6th player will be used. If there is still a tie, a card playoff will be used. Beginning with the most difficult hole, the scores of players from each team will be compared beginning with the number one player through the number six player. The tie is broken if at any point the player from one team has a lower score than the matched player from the opposing team. If there is still a tie, the card playoff will be used with the second most difficult hole. This tie breaking procedure will be used through all nine holes until the tie is broken.

• Boys will play from white tees and girls will play from the red. (Unless mutually agreed upon to do otherwise.)

• All players are responsible for all rules and scoring. HONESTY will govern all play!

• Players should exchange scorecards with playing opponent at the beginning of play. Each player is responsible for keeping track of their own score as well as their opponents score. Players are expected to confirm scores after each hole and at the conclusion of the match. Both players should sign scorecards before they are submitted to coaches.

• Players cannot help each other with clubbing or lining up putts. Players may give yardage and help other members locate missing golf balls.

Range finders are permitted as long, but the information must be shared with all in the group.

No mulligans are allowed and all putts must be putted out.

• Winter rules will be used throughout the golf season. Players may wipe off any mud from the ball and replace it one club length, but no closer to the hole as long as it is not in a hazard or out of bounds. Players can have relief from casual water, no closer to the hole. Casual water is considered when a player steps on the ground and water can be seen coming from underneath their shoe.

• Players may elect to play a ball from inside a red marker hazard. CAUTION: A player’s club cannot be grounded while in the hazard. Practice swing should be taken outside of the hazard line. However, there is no choice if a ball is out of bounds (white stakes). A player must take a one-stroke penalty and follow the procedures for a ball hit out of bounds.

• USGA rules govern play with several exceptions:

o Players may move ball 1 club length in fairway and rough; not in a hazard, no closer to the hole and not from rough to fairway. (Winter rules)

o The maximum score on a hole is double par.

o If a ball is hit into a water hazard, there is a one-stroke penalty and the player may place the ball on the other side of the hazard within two club lengths of the hazard line. The ball must be placed along the line of flight of the ball.

o If a ball is hit in a lateral hazard (red stakes) there is a one-stroke penalty and the ball is placed two club lengths from the hazard line nearest the point of entry.

If a ball is hit out of bounds (white stakes) there is a one-stroke penalty and the ball is placed two club lengths from the white stake line nearest the point of entry.

o If a ball is lost, there is a one-stroke penalty and the ball is placed two club lengths, no closer to the hole at the point nearest to where it was last seen.

REMINDERS FOR SPECTATORS AND PARENTS

• Spectators must stay on the cart path during the playing of the match.

• Spectators cannot assist or caddy for players. They may not help with clubbing or yardage during the playing of the match.

• Parents and spectators cannot help with carrying of bags or provide information that will assist players.

• Parents and other spectators may help with locating lost golf balls.

• Have all equipment at all times. Clubs, balls, tees, markers, towels, umbrella, and shoes are needed for each practice and match. Be prepared for all elements!

• Players must wear soft-spiked shoes.

• Players should identify their ball before play begins. This can be done by markings or by telling their opponent what ball they are using.

• A player should not change their ball during the playing of a golf hole. However, a golf ball may be changed if it is deemed unfit for play. A golf ball may be switched between golf holes.

• Do not ground your club in the bunker or in a lateral hazard.

• Mark all putts behind the ball. Use coin to mark the ball.

• Do not talk to or otherwise distract another player while they are playing. Be careful not to walk or stand in another player’s line.

• Rake all bunkers.

• All strokes must be counted – including “whiffs.”

• Make sure your appearance and demeanor are appropriate. This means being respectful of coaches and other players. Shirts MUST be tucked in, pants pulled up, caps worn with bill forward.

• No jeans are allowed on the golf course. Players should wear a collared shirt, no T-shirts.

• At the beginning and end of all matches, shake hands firmly with your opponent. Remove your cap when shaking hands.

• Pull carts are permitted except when the golf course prohibits their use.

• Range finders are not permitted. (Unless coaches mutually agree to allow the use.)

REMINDERS FOR PRE-MATCH CONFERENCE

• Make sure scorecards are ready for the opposing team(s).

• Coaches should exchange their lineups prior to the start of the match.

• The home coach should stress sportsmanship and honesty in his or her pre-match meeting with all players.

• The home coach should review the rules of etiquette with players during the pre-match meeting.

• Remind all players that caddying is not permitted. Players may not club each other or line-up putts for partners. Also, remind spectators that caddying is not allowed during the match and they must remain on the cart path during play.

• The home coach should provide knowledge about any unique local rules of the golf course. A handout would be a bonus.

• The home coach should remind players to check scores with their opponent(s) at the conclusion of each hole. Also remind players to sign their scorecards at the conclusion of the match.

• The home coach will serve as the final referee for matches.

CONFERENCE CHAMPION

• Conference Champion: After each match 1st - 4th place will be determined using the top 4 scores (out of 6 players). The lowest scoring team will be awarded 1 point, 2nd lowest will get 2 points and 3rd (& 4th) place teams will get 3 points each. The team at the end of the season with the lowest cumulative team point total will be the conference champion.
