About Us

Soméra is a 100% Khmer-owned social venture, officially established in January 2021, with roots dating back to 2009 under the brand name Sovannak. Founded by a group of five friends, our vision is to become a leading social enterprise in Cambodia’s agricultural food sector, positively impacting the lives of Cambodian farmers who partner with us.

We work closely with small local producers, smallholder farmers, and agricultural cooperatives, purchasing their products to manufacture and distribute under our own brand, Soméra (សុមេរា). In addition to bringing their goods to market, we support these farmers in developing and improving product quality, and stabilizing the production chain to secure a reliable supply for the market.

Our mission is to promote and expand the market for Khmer agri-food products, both domestically and internationally. Through our efforts, we empower lives, ensure fair benefits for all stakeholders, and strive to operate in a socially impactful and environmentally friendly manner. Above all, we aim to showcase the potential of Khmer ingenuity and build trust and value in our products.

We do regular independent laboratory testing to guarantee the safety of our products and their healthy content.

At Soméra Palm Sugar, our mission is to ensure a sustainable production process by adhering to international health and social standards, implementing energy-efficient technologies to address climate change and reduce pressure on Cambodian forest resources, and respecting the traditional livelihoods of producer communities while creating fair and equitable job opportunities.

Our Products & Values Chain

Soméra Palm Sugar, sourced from Kampong Chhnang and Kampong Speu provinces, is a premium granulated sugar made from the sap of the Palmyra palm (sugar palm tree). Produced in small batches by family-run producers in rural Cambodia, our palm sugar ranges in color from light blond to rich brown, reflecting seasonal variations and batch differences.

With a consistency similar to brown sugar, Soméra Palm Sugar offers a distinct taste, higher nutritional value, and a lower Glycemic Index compared to cane and processed sugars. It’s ideal for sweetening coffee, tea, and desserts, and serves as a versatile substitute for brown or raw sugar. Its unique flavor enhances a variety of dishes, from curries and caramels to chocolates and fruits.

What sets Soméra Palm Sugar apart is its organic production, free from chemical additives, and the use of fuel-efficient, improved cookstoves. This sustainable method not only enhances the flavor and quality of the sugar but also supports rural Cambodians by promoting environmentally friendly practices. Each kilo of Soméra Palm Sugar helps save 2 kilos of wood, reducing pressure on local forests.

Our palm sugar meets the highest standards, having undergone rigorous food and chemical testing in Cambodia, Vietnam, and Japan. The result is a product that is not only high-quality and environmentally sustainable but also delivers superior taste and health benefits with a lower Glycemic Index than white sugar.

Soméra Pepper from Kampot province

Soméra Black Pepper is crafted from green peppercorns sun-dried to perfection. Our production process is entirely natural and hygienic, with each step performed by hand. Black pepper is renowned for its versatility and is a staple in everyday cooking.

Soméra Red Pepper is made from fully ripened peppercorns, offering a distinctive sweet and fruity flavor and aroma. This pepper adds a unique touch to any dish, enhancing its taste with its rich, natural sweetness.

Soméra White Pepper stands out with its distinctive aroma, achieved by removing the outer skin layers to reveal the core of the peppercorn. This process gives our white pepper a unique and subtle flavor profile.

All our peppers are organically grown without the use of chemicals or pesticides. They are hand-sanitized to ensure the highest levels of hygiene and quality, maintaining our commitment to natural and chemical-free products.

Soméra Roasted Cashew Nuts from Kampong Thom Province are a nutritious and heart-healthy snack, free from cholesterol and chemical additives. Our cashews are naturally roasted to enhance their rich, savory flavor while preserving their beneficial nutrients.

Our partner, Gold Cashew Nut (GCN), established in 2015, continues the legacy of the Cashew Nut Community Project in Santuk District. Initially funded by the Asian Development Bank from 2011 to 2015, this project aimed to support local cashew farmers by providing them with market access. Even after the project's completion, GCN has maintained its collaboration with the community to ensure ongoing market access.

Currently, GCN is involved in a new Cashew Nut Community Project, also in Santuk District, supported by the Kampong Thom Department of Commerce (AIMS Project: Accessing Information about Migration and Safety). This initiative continues our commitment to supporting local farmers and enhancing their market opportunities.
