The Story of How K & K Began
To understand how K & K Outdoor Services came to be, we have to go back—way back.
I could just tell you that I spent an entire summer cutting grass to pay back my great aunt for accidentally burning down her backyard, air conditioning unit, and siding… but where’s the fun in that?
Let’s start from the beginning.
I was about 11 years old, and my little sister and I had a brilliant idea—or so we thought. We decided to take a leftover bag of popcorn from the night before and see what would happen if we lit it on fire. We grabbed the long fireplace matches and headed out to the patio.
I set the bag down on the concrete and started striking matches. The first couple went out before they hit the bag, but on the third try—success! The bag caught fire, and we were standing there giggling, proud of our little science experiment.
Then came the wind.
A gust picked up our flaming popcorn bag and carried it across the yard. We laughed—until it landed in the middle of the dry, dormant grass. That’s when the panic set in.
The water hose wasn’t hooked up, so I told my sister to grab cups of water as fast as she could. She started freaking out, saying we needed to wake up our aunt. I told her, “No, just get me cups of water!” but she was gone.
I found a gallon jug, started filling it up, and ran outside—only to see that the fire had grown way faster than I imagined. I dumped the water as best I could and ran back inside for more.
Before I could get back outside, my aunt was already heading through the dining room to see what was going on. My heart sank. I knew I was in for it by the look on her face, as she is telling us to call the fire department. By the time the fire department arrived, the grass was gone, part of the siding was melted, the AC unit was ruined, and the fence was scorched.
Needless to say, I had some explaining to do.
My punishment? Well, when I first got home, I could not sit down for awhile. You dont have to ask, i'll tell you, it hurt! I Spent the summer mowing a three-quarter-acre yard for one of my parents’ friends to pay back the cost of repairs. I didn’t think it was too bad, considering the circumstances.
So, for the entire summer, I pushed a little 20-inch mower across that yard and used an electric corded weed eater to trim it. It was hot, it was hard, and it taught me more than I realized at the time—perseverance, dedication, and the value of my word.
Over the years, I worked a lot of different trades, but lawn care was always something I fell back on. I’ve always enjoyed being outdoors and taking something overgrown or neglected and turning it into something clean, sharp, and full of life.
By 2019, I’d had enough of relying on “regular” jobs that never quite fit who I was. So, I decided to go all in and launch K & K Outdoor Services.
Since then, I’ve expanded far beyond mowing—offering full outdoor transformations, from landscaping and cleanup to power washing and seasonal maintenance. I’ve learned a lot along the way—sometimes the hard way. I’ve even lost money on jobs before, but that’s all part of owning your own business. It’s a rite of passage.
No matter what, I’ve pushed through every setback, stayed true to my word, and kept growing—just like the yards I mow.
That little fire I started all those years ago? Turns out, it lit something bigger—a passion that still drives me today.
And that’s how K & K was born.
P.S. We have since learned where not to start fires! Seriously!
