This is one of the departments which started from the very beginning of the college, i.e. 1964 as this is one of the compulsory subjects in graduation for students for all stream. The college introduced Bengali as a general subject in 2001-02, and opened it as Honours subject in 2002-03.

​Now the Department of Bengali is the largest dept. in Humanities which offers 95 seats in Honours, apart from the students of General course. It is one of the most successful departments in respect of pass-out rates every year. This department is served by faculties with Ph.D and M.Phil Degrees.

​The Dept. of Bengali arranges U.G.C. sponsored National and State Level Seminars and also Departmental Seminars at regular intervals. The Department also arranges study tours with their students.

The students of the department are involved in various cultural activities in the collage as staging drama, competition of music and recitation, publishing Wall Magazine, etc. The Dept. regularly arranges lectures by faculties from other colleges and Universities as a part of ‘Faculty Exchange Programme'. The Faculties of this Dept. are also invited to give lectures in other institutes.

​The Department is very student friendly which keeps good relationship with the students and provide mentoring in both academic and personal level.

​The Dept. is now equipped with a departmental Book Bank and Audio Visual facilities. It has also a dream to establish a Computerized Linguistics Lab in near future.
