Reigel says that adulthood occurs in an individual's response to internal and external changes and rejects the idea that adulthood happens in predictable stages. He says that there are four dimensions of development, and that development only occurs when a change in one of the dimensions requires an adjustment in one or more of the other three dimensions
1. Individual Psychological Dimension (Emotional Maturity)
2. Individual Biological Dimension (Physical and Sexual Maturity)
3. Cultural-Sociological Dimension (Societal Expectations)
4. Environmental Dimension (Economic, political)
Callie mature's sexually, affecting her Individual Biological Dimension as she realizes that she is bisexually attracted to both men and women. This causes changes in the other dimensions. In the Cultural-Sociological Dimension her parents and family reject her because of her sexuality, so she has to adjust to life without her family in it, and accept that her friends and her girlfriend are her only support system. An intern also tries to flirt with her even though it clearly makes them uncomfortable to do it. Callie's parents also withdraw economic support, affecting Callie's Environmental Dimension as she finds herself completely broke. As three Dimensions are affected, Callie undergoes development, becoming more independent and more confident in herself and her life choices. This develops her Individual Psychological Dimension, bringing more emotional maturity.
