The best time to visit Ahmedabad (anywhere in Gujarat, actually) is during Uttarayan or Makara Sankranti, in my humble opinion. That is when the citizens go all out to enjoy themselves, when the kite mania is on, when you get to see the city in a whole new avatar. This is apart from the Navratri season, when the city is decked up at its glorious best, of course.

Come January, and little make-shift stalls start appearing all over the city, some selling a variety of kites, threads, finger caps, sunglasses and many other small and big things that make up the entire experience of flying kites. Some of these stalls offer ready-to-buy thread on firkis for flying kites, many boasting of the best-quality one from Surat.

The last couple of days before Uttarayan, there is much hustle and bustle on the streets. These make-shift stalls (specially those in the old part of the city) burst to the seams with people choosing the kites they want to fly, the right sort of thread, the other accompaniments they would need, lanterns that would go up in the sky at night, snacks to nibble on as the family flew kites, and so on.

The sad part about Uttarayan is the huge number of humans, animals and birds who die on the streets, their bodies cut deep and ugly by stray pieces of sharp thread. Pick up a newspaper in Gujarat just after Uttarayan, and the kite-thread death statistics are as astonishing as the stories are gory. As a preventive measure, it is best not to walk or ride around the streets in open vehicles just before and during Uttarayan.

Uttaran needs to be experienced first hand to really understand the thrill and the magic of the festival. Your post brought back wonderful memories of kites and kite flying in Ahmedabad. Days of flying kites, running after kites, and getting the Manja ready.

It appears that by1943 the RAF antenna raising system was refined further. They seemed happy with the radio but the box kite was superseded by a Conyne design which could be rocket launched from a Very pistol:

The three kites & rocket assemblies came in a yellow, wooden, military-looking crate about one meter tall. I only recognised them because I had purchased a US military (box kite only) years ago. The rocket tubes are made of wood and one is cracking due to drying out. It would be fun, and probably exceedingly foolish, to fire one off!

You mention on the site, that the early box kites used a wire tether which served as a radio antenna. My kites, and the US version I owned, have some kind of string tethers. What, then, was the purpose of the kite? Was it used as a rescue signal? Thanks. Ron

Kite Fest has become a premier kiting event, attracting kite enthusiasts from across the country and Canada. The event is free and open to everyone. Events include fun contests for kids, kite making, candy drops, demonstrations, door prizes and music.

Among the outdoor activities, this year are boats in the ice show, open ice skating, and a kite festival. Other activities include a beer keg toss on the ice, a bean bag toss tournament, and a 5K run.

Football mania has gripped West Bengal too. Ajit Dutta, a kite maker in Kolkata, has manufactured custom-made kites based on Fifa World Cup 2018 trophy. The colourful kites, he hopes, would be loved by the sports lover in the state.

Donned my coat in 40 degree (F) weather and headed out to the beach. What a lovely day.....! Rekindling the kite flying bug from childhood.

Purchased a small parafoil kite from a local shop in order to get out of the house and avoid any cabin fever. I hadn't flown a kite in years. Now I have several different ones. This is one of my favorite photos.

Winds were forecasted for 20mph today, so I decided to take out my new Pocket Sled kite. I also brought out my sparred Sled kite in case the winds momentarily died down.

When I reached the field, winds had still not reached the 20mph mark. There were periods of no wind followed by strong gusts. I tried to fly the Pocket Sled, but I had problems getting it inflated.

During a calm period I tried to get the sparred Sled up in the air. Unfortunately, the winds were still too much for it. However, I managed some short flights during which I had a friend take some great shots.

Using the bendy spar for other kites. Here is a conventional canard kite: length 88 cm, bendy spreader 42 + 42 cm set 31 cm from stern, foresail set to 30 cm from nose, bridle 30 cm fore and aft from 30 cm from nose and stern and tow point also 43.5 cm vertical from long spar dowel and oven-bag skin - a delight.

Sprung 3 was not a success and fellow kite flier Steve aptly named it the 'FROG' because the bendy topside spreader was raked forward and was used to attach a skin atop the delta skin creating a gape-mouthed thing which despite many attempts just swallowed air and flopped - a smaller entry point and inflatable section confined to near the central spar, and more lateral wing area should work. In its place the original Sprung 3 was converted into a version of Sprung 4 - just without the keel section of 4 (see photos)

Sprung 4 is a little humdinger, flies well with a small amount of tail in this 20 knot breeze. 5 mm spars, spreader 29 cm.

The bendy spreader is underneath, held with elastic bands:

Central spar is in the keel =46 cm, trailing edges 47 cm each side, leading edge 66 cm, LE spars 54 cm, spreader location 35 cm from nose, keel 5 cm deep, along keel from nose tow point = 20.5 cm, spreader 25 cm.

Spring is one of my absolute favorite times of the year. I love seeing flowers pop up after a long winter, plus all of the fresh smells, birds chirping, and grass turning green again. And the breezy spring days are always perfect for flying kites!

I love how open ended this project is and that it allows the kids to be creative by choosing different colors and patterns to decorate their paper bag kites. Plus the supplies are super basic and fairly inexpensive, so the kids can make a few different kites to fly outside. We even tied ours to the tree and watched it fly around!

You have often stood on the beach and watched the kite in the sky, wondered why the lines don't tangle, or watched action videos and big air contests. And you wonder if you could learn to do the same.

You want to learn kitesurfing too? And preferably fast and safe? Thanks to constant innovations in the development of kitesurfing equipment, kitesurfing has become a safe sport over the last decades, which you can learn quickly and easily. You will be rewarded by the indescribably beautiful feeling of gliding over the water, which has a high addiction factor.

We would almost like to claim: Every active person, no matter if man or woman, can learn kitesurfing. If you feel fit, you can't be too young or too old for kiting. Our oldest kitesurfing student in SICILY learned kitesurfing at the age of 69.

Even though it looks like it. But: For kitesurfing you don't have to expend a lot of power or muscle effort - it's more about practicing a technique that doesn't require a high application of force. Kitesurfing requires much less power than windsurfing, surfing or wakeboarding, because when kiting you wear a harness that distributes the power of the kite over your entire body. So you don't necessarily have to be well trained, physically super fit and muscular for kitesurfing. A normal fitness level is absolutely sufficient.

Experienced kitesurfers can easily cruise for hours on end over the water with only moderate exertion. Only when you practise jumps or freestyle tricks will your fast forces in arms and legs and especially the back and abdominal muscles be challenged. Only after your first attempts at jumps will you be surprised by sore muscles after your kite session.

To learn kitesurfing you do not need any previous knowledge. However, it helps if you have already dealt with wind (e.g. kite flying) or board sports (e.g. wakeboarding, snowboarding, surfing, windsurfing).

The prejudice "kitesurfing is dangerous" is fortunately not correct. Kitesurfing has developed in recent years through technical development of kite equipment to a sport that is by no means more dangerous than other outdoor sports. However, you should master the technique, use common sense and not overestimate yourself. At the same time you must always be aware that you are working with two forces of nature at the same time - wind and water, which you should know well and never underestimate. If you want to learn kitesurfing, you should definitely take a professional kitesurfing course, otherwise kiting can be very dangerous.

In your kitesurfing course you will learn, besides kitesurfing theory and riding technique, a lot of things that are extremely relevant for your safety, such as material knowledge, the appropriate kite size for the right wind, assessment of wind and weather conditions, professional construction of the material, safe launching and landing, the use of the internationally valid hand signals, right of way and general rules on the water.

It is of course absolutely NOT advisable to try to teach yourself to kitesurf. The sport is simply much too complex and there is a lot to consider. Even if you are already an expert in other board sports, kitesurfing is all about kite and kite control and much less about board skills. Therefore it is also essential for you as a board expert to take a kite course.

Without the necessary knowledge in theory and experience in practice, you can put yourself in great (life) danger if you handle the kite improperly. You are also a safety risk for all other people on the beach and on the water. A kitesurfing course at a professional, licensed kitesurfing school is therefore absolutely necessary and highly recommended.

To learn kitesurfing, you should choose a spot that has very easy conditions suitable for beginners. Absolutely ideal conditions for beginners are flat water, no waves, shallow water, plenty of space, a constant, medium wind and pleasant temperatures. So you will not be distracted by anything and can concentrate completely on your kite, your kite instructor and learning to kite. If the water is shallow, i.e. maximum hip-deep, you will always have solid ground under your feet and can easily walk back to the starting point of your exercises (without having to swim), because the kite will often pull you downwind (the side facing away from the wind).

However, it is important to practice or simulate the action in deep water during the training in the standing area, so that the change to deep water is not so difficult and you are prepared for the demands of launching, landing, releasing and kitesurfing in deep water. ff782bc1db
