Artist statement: This group of images is to take a closer look at the 'Professionalism' of Journalism and types of media. My Subject matter for this section is: 57th Edition of the Associated Press Stylebook, red necktie, Sony headphones, and Canon digital camera. This idea was formed from items I had in my bag, the items of a "journalist" or someone who likes media, in terms of photos, music, and writing. There's only so many ways you can photograph a book. Using the necktie and my annotations of the book as well as incorporating other types of media I enjoy made the photos more representative of myself and gave my photographs more dimension. This process made me realize how to put together a body of work that feels cohesive and has each photo visually complement the others.
Artist statement: I chose William Eggleston. because of the way he captures the simple things in life with such amazing colors and composition. The photos are like positive memories of everyday life. The pictures I took are on the simplistic side while also trying to capture the color and feeling of the experience. The process of trying to photograph like this definitely made me take a step back from my usual photos, which are either close ups for detail or fast paced subjects. This photography was challenging me to take photos that looked like my eyes took them, life size and a human's perception of life.
Artist statement: This group of pictures is supposed to capture the ways reflection affects how we see the world. The subject matter of these photos ranges from people to other artworks. The use of this many subjects is to cover many different places and situations where if you took a moment to see it, the reflection could change your perspective. To capture this I had to slow down whenever there was glass, or water, or mirrors to try to see if there was more than just the object. I focused on reflection for this unit because reflections of light make for good contrast and I feel like many things can be overlooked because many people don’t pay attention.
Artist statement: My subject matter for this unit is flower sculptures made from pipe cleaners. The purpose of these sculptures and the photos of them is to signify inner growth. While the flowers aren't living the symbolism is of personal growth and continuing when things are hard. I had seen the flowers on tiktok and decided to give it a try. I really enjoyed finding a new craft/ hobby. The meaning behind some of the flowers is also indicative of growth and overreaching lessons in life. Examples include; White chrysanthemums- loyalty, Pink Lily- compassion, Rose- romance, Tiger Lily- courage, Blue Lily- devine connection, Morning Glory- new beginnings, Pink Hibiscus- friendship, Lavender- calmness, and Blue hydrangea- forgiveness, rejection and regret.
Artist statement: I chose sports photography for this unit because it is something I am considering pursuing. I photographed the North Ridgeville Varsity Softball team for my unit as I was already planning to go to the game. Part of sports photography that is most rewarding is capturing a good shot in the midst of the action and movement. Freezing the motion and capturing the moment is, in my opinion, the best part of this type of photography. The lighting wasn’t the best and I did have to stand on a bucket to get over the fence but I really like how the results came out. Overall the experience solidified my interest in this type of photography.
Artist statement: For my independent study I wanted to try street photography. I have seen so many accounts on social media that specialize in it so I wanted to try my hand at it. It was definitely a struggle to overcome the anxiety of pointing a camera at random people, it was a bit easier because I was in a large group but still scary nonetheless. I really enjoy the photos I ended up with, I feel like it is a pretty good reflection of the city and the people that live there. Overall I enjoyed trying this type of photography.
