Mars Mufa'am is a mykiw that was born with a rare genetic mutation. In this mutation, which is commonly referred to as "The Monster Gene", Mars' animal side is a lot more monster-like in appearance (see "What Is A Mykiw?" for more details on the race and "The Monster Gene") and carries the power of thunder inside his body. Thus, he is immune to electrical shock of any kind, but with all that electricity surging in him, part of it zapping out from his deformed tail, he's found he has to avoid swimming, bathing, etc, with others.

Mother of both siblings, Lydia Mufa'am gave birth to Am'mec seven years before she would be in labor with Mars. While giving birth to Mars, unknown to anyone at the time he would be born with this mutation, a large surge of electricity came from baby Mars and shocked straight to Lydia's heart, causing her untimely death and the need for an emergency cesarean section. Their father, who at the time was slowly becoming a deadbeat anyways, went into a rage, blaming infant Mars for the death of his lover. Nurses and police on staff escorted the father out of the room, to which he ran off, abandoning his children then and there. With neither parent nor a home, Am'mec and Mars stayed in foster care, mostly staying within the adoption center as no one seemed to care for Mars and Am'mec refused to leave him, until Am'mec was eighteen and Mars was eleven, giving her legal rights over him and to be on her own. It was hard, but they both cared for one another deeply, Am'mec being the only family Mars really knew, and they made it work.

Coupled with anxiety, Mars developed a depression disorder soon after being on his own with Am'mec. As if the weight of his world suddenly crashed over his shoulders, he blamed himself for his mother's death, his father's disappearance, and his sister's hardships. It would only get worse from here, but he learned how to generally hide it. That is, from everyone but Am'mec, who seemed to just know when her little brother was feeling down. It wasn't until he was sixteen was he officially diagnosed.

Another big part of his life came in the form of a friend he would have for years to come--Raiden Dekan. The two met in the middle of high school and have been inseparable since. Mars opened up to Raiden about his hardships one day and the night before graduation from high school, Raiden (who happens to be part tiger, originally with white fur and hair) permanently dyed his fur a lime green and his human hair purple. His reasoning was "so you don't have to stand out on your own, we can be different together". It wasn't long for feelings between the two to develop and a few years after high school did the two finally come to terms with their budding attraction, with Raiden rather awkwardly asking Mars to become partners.

Since then, Mars has been trying to hold a job, take care of his mental health, and help his sister and his boyfriend in any way he can. Currently, he lives with Am'mec in a small apartment, with his sister bringing in most of the necessities for the house.

What Is A Mykiw?

A mykiw is a race that is part human and part animal--a fusion of two souls into one. Mykiwes generally take on some appearance of their animal side while in human form (mostly tails and ears, perhaps a few other traits in certain cases like markings) and they range in species. Mykiwes can freely shift between human and animal form at will.

"The Monster Gene", as referred to in Mars' tale, has been around since the beginning of the race. Early on, they were often seen to be partly divine, as the beasts they could shift into usually resembled creatures from the tales of old, tales of gods and goddess and their animal companions. Some are even blessed (or cursed, all in the eye of the beholder) with certain magical abilities of elements, etc. It wasn't until the race became more modernized did they start to treat the Monster Gene mykiwes like outcasts, using slurs, and finding them to be "evil" in nature.
