Our Story

Kismayo Kitchen first opened in Burlington, Vermont in 2019 as the first Somali restaurant in Vermont. The restaurant was the passion and pride of chef and owner Ahmed Omar, affectionately called "Omar" by all who knew him. Kismayo Kitchen quickly became a gathering place for the Burlington community where one could find not only delicious food but kindness and a place to connect and share stories.

Omar's journey to Vermont as a refugee was a testament to his unwavering determination and strength. With Kismayo Kitchen he embraced his American dream with open arms, creating a multicultural menu that appeals to all backgrounds. The restaurant pays hommage to his mother, who was a chef in Kismayo, Somalia, where Omar was born.

The youngest of 14 children, Omar fled war-torn Somalia to live in Kenyan refugee camps. At the age of 17 his family moved to the United States and he graduated from Burlington High School.

A beloved husband, father, and community member, Omar left this world all to soon at the age of 36 in 2023. He is remembered for his compassion, generosity, radient smile, and how he touched so many lives.

Omar's family continues to honor his legacy by running the restaurant, and Kismayo Kitchen is currently open.
